We all know that stress is bad but how bad? Stressing out can affect our ability to learn and distort the details of an event or experience. It can also lead to feeling tired or exhausted. In order to combat stress, there are several things you can do including meditation, exercise, taking regular breaks, linking learning to physical actions, and seeking professional assistance.

Did you know that hugging your kids can help ease physical pain? That’s because adding other sensations to your body, like scratching an itch, rubbing or hugging, gives your brain something else to focus on, which can affect how it perceives your level of pain. When we hug, our brain releases the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin helps us feel less anxious, afraid or stressed. These feelings of safety give us relief in more ways than one. So in case you haven’t already, give your little ones a warm hug today.

Did you know that reading can be good for your mental and physical health? This week we’re sharing a few ways your body responds to reading a book. One great benefit reading has on our bodies is its effects on our blood pressure and heart rates. In 2009, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Seton Hall University conducted an experiment on health science students. Their goal was to measure the effects of yoga, humor, and reading on one’s stress levels. According to their research, the students felt less stressed (as proved by lower blood pressure and heart rates) after 30 minutes of reading. So the next time you find yourself feeling stressed, find a quiet place to rest and open a good book.
