Lateral Epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, is an overuse injury characterized by pain and tenderness on the outer (lateral) part of the elbow.
Key details include:
Cause: It typically results from repetitive strain or forceful activities involving the forearm muscles, specifically the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon.
Pathology: Despite the "-itis" suffix, it is often a degenerative process (tendinosis) involving microscopic tears rather than long-term inflammation.
Common Activities: While named after tennis, most cases occur in non-athletes due to tasks like typing, painting, or using hand tools.
Symptoms: Main symptoms include sharp or burning pain at the outer elbow bony bump, which may radiate down the forearm and cause weakened grip strength.
Management: Most cases are self-limiting and resolve with conservative care such as rest, physical therapy, bracing, Shockwave therapy and NSAIDs.
