Why Astronauts Don’t Try to Stay Calm
Would you sit on top of a rocket… knowing it’s about to launch? People think astronauts are trained to stay calm. They’re not. Their brain is saying exactly what yours would, “This feels like a bad idea.”
So what stops them from panicking? It’s not confidence. It’s not willpower. It’s process. Astronauts are trained repeatedly to follow strict procedures under pressure. Checklists. Steps. Sequences. Their brain doesn’t go to “How do I feel?”, it goes to “What’s next?” And that is something we can all use.
Most people try to calm themselves down when panic hits, but that often keeps attention on the problem. The smarter move is to give your brain something else to focus on, because it can’t fully panic and fully focus at the same time. It’s the same principle whether you’re in a stressful situation, struggling with anxiety, or lying awake at 2 AM overthinking. We might not be going into space, but we all know what it feels like when our thoughts start running away with us.
