Ear Wax Reveals Parkinson’s Disease Biomarkers

A breakthrough diagnostic method may allow for early Parkinson’s detection through a simple ear wax swab.

Because the inner ear is protected from the environment, researchers analyzed its sebum content for volatile chemical markers of disease.

They identified four VOCs that were altered in people with Parkinson’s and used these to train an AI-based detection system.

This system accurately differentiated Parkinson’s cases from healthy controls with a success rate of 94%.

The researchers believe this could become a scalable, accessible screening tool.

Further multi-site validation is needed, but the findings offer new hope for timely intervention.
