The first recorded case of a replacement tooth made of metal comes from the body of an Egyptian king who lived in approximately 1000 BC.

His upper jawbone has a copper peg that has been hammered into it, although it is not certain if the peg was attached during his lifetime as a tooth replacement or after his death.

Various other materials have also been found by archaeologists in the jaws of ancient skulls, from rare gems such as jade to common materials such as sea shells.

It was not until centuries later that significant developments in the techniques used for dental implants were made.

Also known as dental tartar, is a crusty deposit that can trap stains on the teeth and cause discoloration. It creates a strong bond that can only be removed by a dental professional.

Unlike plaque, which can be removed with normal brushing and flossing, calculus is harder to remove, and is strongly bonded to the tooth structure.

Tartar formation may also make it more difficult to remove new plaque and bacteria. Individuals vary greatly in their susceptibility to plaque and tartar on teeth. For many of us, these deposits build up faster as we age.

Your dentist or hygienist will use sharp instruments to scrape (scale) the tartar above and below the gumline and smooth the tooth’s surface which helps prevent plaque from adhering and more tartar from forming.

Just as heart disease can creep up on you silently, gum disease is pretty sneaky too. Symptoms may not show up until it is advanced.

Would you be concerned if your eyes were to bleed when you rubbed them?

Would it concern you if your scalp bled whilst brushing your hair?

It definitely would.

HEALTHY GUMS DO NOT BLEED. IT IS NOT NORMAL.

If your gums are bleeding when you brush or while flossing, then this is called "gum disease".

The most common cause of bleeding gums is build-up of plaque bacteria/tartar.

If your gums are bleeding, you need to see a hygienist or dentist for the correct education and treatment to help overcome this.

Our Story

Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, Dr. Matthew Jackson earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University. He then completed the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program at Nova Southeastern University, in Davie, Florida. Dr. Jackson is passionate about providing the highest quality dental care in a warm, comfortable environment. His scope of dental practice includes all aspects of general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, with emphasis on oral surgery, crowns, orthodontics, implant restoration, dentures, and partials. In addition to continually updating our already modern dental practice with the latest in dental technology, Dr. Jackson strives to maintain a high level of expertise through regular participation in continuing education courses and seminars.

Dr. Jackson prides his practice on being a judgement free zone.

In his spare time, Dr. Jackson enjoys exercising, cooking, and is involved in organized dentistry. He is currently the President of the Lake County Dental Association (2013-2014). Dr. Jackson also believes in giving back to the local community and spends time providing free dental care to needy patients through regular participation in the St. Luke’s Dental Clinic in Eustis, as well as the Florida Baptist Convention’s Mobile Dental Clinic.
