The Midwest College of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (formerly Midwest College of Oriental Medicine) was founded in 1979, making it the oldest school of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in America. Since then, faculty and student interns have contributed to community service at Cook County Hospital, for the Pontifical Order of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi in Milwaukee, and at the Chica

go AIDS Alternative Health Project. Graduates of our programs work in hospitals, medical groups and in private practice. They are on the faculty of other schools, the Boards of professional associations, state and national agencies, and are on the staff of hospitals across the country. Since 1986, college administrators and faculty have participated in local and national organizations, including the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Up until 2020, the Midwest College conducted foreign internship trips to China for more than 20 years. Students have gained clinical experience at Chinese medical hospitals all over China, including Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Guangzhou. In 1996, the Midwest College became formally affiliated with the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. The College continues to collaborate with leaders of TCM education to assure that our programs follow the true principles of TCM theory, while keeping up to date with the current clinical practice of Chinese Medicine. The College's goal is to retain the traditional principles and attitudes, from times past, that still draws patients to this medicine today; a medicine that values the spirit and heart as it heals the body. MCAHM’s newest Ancient Founders Scholarship honors three legendary doctors who shaped the foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Our final spotlight: Zhang Zhongjing (c. 150–219 CE)

Known as the “Hippocrates of China,” Zhang Zhongjing authored the influential Shang Han Za Bing Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases).

His work laid the foundation for:

We are thrilled to introduce a new scholarship at MCAHM — the Ancient Founders Scholarship 🎉

This $2,500 merit-based award supports academic excellence and is applied as a tuition reduction.

To qualify, students must:
✏️ Be enrolled in at least 4 courses per quarter starting Fall 2025
✏️ Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA throughout enrollment
✏️ Be a new student starting Summer 2025 or a current student who meets academic eligibility
✏️ Remain enrolled full-time (4 courses/quarter) to retain eligibility.

The college has been accredited since 1987. In 2014, the College's Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine programs received a 6 year re-accreditation. The Midwest College has conducted foreign internship trips to China for over twenty years. Students have gained clinical experience at Chinese medical hospitals all over China, including Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Guangzhou. In 1996, the Midwest College became formally affiliated with the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.
