You may be developing new ways to study and learn. You may be approaching new topics, or old ones from a more adult perspective. You may be engaging in dialogue about novel ideas or changing your opi
nions about ones that were more familiar. But, beyond intellectual and academic changes, you are also entering another developmental period of your life, becoming a young adult. As such, you may be entering relationships in a new way, re-examining old relationships, and continuing to develop your identity. You may find some of this stressful, some exciting, and some surprising. Northwestern offers workshop series that can help to navigate this new and exciting place of personal growth. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers developmental programming workshops at the Life Skills Center in Evanston and in various locations on the Chicago campus. These workshops were developed based on research conducted specifically on Northwestern students.. The workshops cover a variety of topics. There is a stress management clinic designed to help you find healthy ways to cope with academic and personal stress. An emotional intelligence and intimate relationships workshop is designed to assist you in knowing what goes into a healthy romantic relationship and how to communicate better with dating partners. Communicating with confidence is a workshop which offers guidance in being assertive. The perfectionism workshop provides vital skills to help you retain academic excellence, while not pushing yourself to a point of being anxious and exhausted. There are also workshops on such issues as long distance relationships, overcoming shyness, getting a good night’s sleep, and others. Additional workshops are also being developed around student needs. The workshops are free to students. They are typically between one and three sessions, with each session being one to two hours in length. The workshops are not therapy, but are a forum in which you will learn from trained psychologists, psychiatrists, and other clinicians and in which you can talk with other students about these important issues. You will also practice various skills within workshops. For more information or to sign up for a workshop, please contact CAPS at 847-491-2151 or d-programming@u.northwestern.edu.
