🤔Did You Know? You Can Break Free From People Pleasing🤔

You don't have to stop caring about others to let go of people pleasing habits. Breaking the cycle takes a lot of practice, but each small step builds healthier relationships and confidence.

Let's take a look at some helpful steps to break the pattern:

✅Seek support - Therapy can help you break free from old patterns and build your confidence by honoring your needs.
✅Pause before saying "yes" - Ask yourself, "Am I agreeing out of guilt, fear, or a genuine desire?"
✅Practice small boundaries first - Try setting limits in low-stakes situations first, like saying no to an extra task at work.
✅Challenge the guilt - Remind yourself that having your own needs doesn't make you selfish, it makes you human.
✅Use clear "I" statements - For example, say no to an ask by saying, "I can't take that on right now, but I hope it goes well for you."

🌱Every time you say "no" to a draining people pleasing ask, you create space to say "yes" to what truly matters to you.

Breaking the cycle takes time, practice, and self-compassion. Therapy is a great way to find non-judgmental support, and we're here to help you if you're ready to make that step.

🤔Did You Know? People Pleasing is a Survival Skill🤔

People pleasing isn't something we just get out of nowhere. More often than not, it's a pattern that starts in childhood to help a child feel accepted, safe, and/or loved.

Some common roots include:

👉Keeping the peace to avoid conflict or anger from caregivers
👉Taking on the role of "fixer" or "peacemaker" in the family
👉Growing up in a home where love or approval felt conditional
👉Internalizing beliefs such as "If others are happy, I'll be happy," or "if I take care of everyone else, I'll be loved."

While people pleasing coping strategies may have protected you at one time, as an adult, these strategies often lead to burnout, anxiety, and feeling unseen.

🌱Healing begins with recognizing your worth isn't tied to keeping everyone else happy.

Check out next week's post to learn some helpful steps to break the cycle.

🤔Did You Know? People Pleasing Harms You🤔

Being a people pleaser puts you in danger of significantly harming your own mental health. Constantly putting others first can take a toll on your well-being in many different ways.

👉Check out these potential impacts

✅Increased stress from anticipating everyone's needs and emotions.
✅Anxiety from worrying about getting approval from others.
✅Burnout due to always giving to others without recharging.
✅Resentment from feeling taken advantage of.
✅Low self-worth from believing your value depends on what you do for others.

Caring for others is important, but it shouldn't come at the expense of taking care of yourself. Remember, you can't pull water out of an empty well. If you or someone you love is ready to overcome a pattern of people pleasing behavior, we're ready to give you a helping hand💙

Check out next week's post to find out where people pleasing behavior comes from.

🤔Did You Know? What the Heck is People Pleasing?🤔

People pleasing is behavior that goes beyond kindness and courtesy. It's a pattern of prioritizing the needs of others while frequently ignoring your own needs.

👉Common traits include:

✅Saying "yes" when you want to say "no"
✅Avoiding conflicts at all costs
✅Over-apologizing or blaming yourself
✅Feeling responsible for everyone else's happiness
✅Feeling scared of being called "selfish"

If this sounds like your or someone you love, know there is help available. Healthy relationships are built on honesty, not just compliance. Look for our post next week where we'll explore why people pleasing hurts your mental health.

🧩Did You Know? Masking is Common in Autism and ADHD🧩

Many people with autism or ADHD "mask" their symptoms to appear more neurotypical. "Masking" is when someone hides or suppresses their natural behaviors (e.g., fidgeting, stimming, avoiding eye contact, or struggling with focus, in order to fit in or avoid judgment.

Masking often starts in childhood and becomes second nature, but it does come at a cost:

🧠Mental exhaustion
💔Feeling disconnected from one's true self
😣Increased anxiety and burnout

Just because someone looks fine, or seems to hold it together in public, doesn't mean they aren't struggling in private.

💡If someone in your life "crashes" after social situations, needs alone time to recover, or seems to behave differently depending on the setting, it could be masking.

Let's make room for authenticity, not just performance.💚
