While giving birth women need all the support they can get. Some women even choose to hire a doula, trained to help them through labor. But not all women can afford to have that extra support. Now a new program at Swedish Hospital is helping high-risk pregnant women.

Had a great time at the NW Doula Conference this week. Enjoyed the keynote on trends in the doula profession by Amy Gilliland, author of the blog Doula-ing the Doula; a talk on serving LGBTQ families; and one on marketing in the digital age. Here's a pic of me on a panel about different models of doula compensation and one of the "doula speed dating" activity.

This is amazing! The exact mechanism for the onset of labor has long evaded researchers. Does labor begin because the mom's body signals it is ready? Or does the baby provide a signal it is ready to be born? Or is it a combination of the two? This study provides compelling evidence that the baby regulates timing of its own birth. So cool! Items designated with the word “required” are necessary. And you’ll notice there is only one of them – a car seat (most hospitals won’t let you leave without it.) All other items are optional! So don’t feel like you need to get or pack everything...
