Most of us know that copaiba essential oil is great for muscular soreness and to support a healthy inflammatory response, but in my opinion copaiba is underutilized for its calming effects.

A randomized controlled clinical trial evaluated the anxiety-relieving effects of inhaling copaiba essential oil in comparison with control (jojoba oil). Copaiba oil was diffused from an atomizing diffuser (pure oils, no water) placed on the ground in the corner of a room so that the subjects would not easily notice it set to disperse oils for 60 seconds followed by a 5-second pause. Subjects then participated in a mental load task involving mental arithmetic. Heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, salivary cortisol, and electroencephalogram were measured as objective gauges of stress and anxiety state. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used for subjects to self-report perceived stress and anxiety. A significant decrease in heart rate and salivary cortisol, as well as STAI scores, was noted in the copaiba group when compared to the jojoba group. In addition, a remarkable reduction in beta wave activity was observed in the left midfrontal region (F3) of the brain when participants inhaled copaiba oil. The findings of the study show that inhaling copaiba essential oil can reduce anxiety during mentally demanding tasks.
