Typically when one thinks about fat loss, they think about the aesthetics of it: getting ripped for summer, popping muscles and washboard abs. However, the health benefits of losing body fat (if you're overweight) often get overlooked. So let's touch base on some of those.

1. Cardiovascular health improves. Your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides tend to improve. This dramatically lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiac events.

2. Your risk of all-cause mortality drops.

3. Losing fat powerfully reduces the risk of diabetes and increases insulin sensitivity. It's been estimated that for every kilogram of fat lost, there is a 16% lower chance of progression to diabetes in people with glucose intolerance.

4. Fat loss may improve your depression, anxiety, and self-esteem.
β β β β
5. Losing fat reduces pain and improves function in weight-bearing joints such as your knees and hips.
β β β β
6. Fat in your liver decreases. With enough fat loss, fatty liver disease is potentially reversible.
β β β β
7. You lower your risk of obesity-linked cancers. Excess visceral fat (the deep belly fat around your organs) is literally trying to kill you. It's hormonally active and pumps out harmful inflammatory cytokines, increasing systemic inflammation that can lead to cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic issues. Intentional fat loss is associated with a reduced risk of these obesity-linked cancers and other conditions.
