Stepping Into the Shoes of Dementia Patients 🦷💙

Our dental hygiene students recently participated in an eye-opening Dementia Live simulation in the Minka with the USI Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) to better understand the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia. They experienced what it’s like to cope with cognitive changes, hearing and vision loss, and limited dexterity—helping them build empathy and practical skills for patient care.

Prior to this session, the students learned Teepa Snow's Hand-under-Hand@ technique for toothbrushing, which can make the task feel less overwhelming and more like a collaborative activity.

These future dental professionals are learning that oral health is about more than teeth—it’s about compassion, patience and connection.

Big thanks to our alumni and partners for supporting hands-on learning!

When our Radiologic and Imaging Sciences program needed additional equipment to enhance MRI simulator training, 2013 alum Aaron Gerling stepped up. Aaron, who works in the MRI department at Deaconess, reached out to his network, and Olaf Roeder, GE Region Modality Leader for MR Imaging, answered the call by bringing the first of what will be several imaging coils to the hospital, where our students had the chance to see it in action.

An MRI coil acts like an antenna, helping the MRI machine capture signals from the body to create detailed images. Until now, our simulator only had a head coil—this donation means students can practice positioning coils for different areas of the body.

Congratulations to senior nursing student Charli Grafton for being named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Tournament Team!

Charli played a key role in USI Women’s Soccer making history with its first-ever OVC Tournament wins and reaching the semifinals for the first time since joining the conference in 2022. She scored two of USI’s five goals in the tournament—both game-winners!

Way to go, Charli! 🎓⚽

Cultural Meals in the Kinney College! 🍽️❤️ Yesterday, we took a culinary trip to Central America and South Korea, and our Food and Nutrition students learned about quantity food production and purchasing!

This week, USI Nursing faculty set up Code Blue Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) teaching stations in the Kinney College Clinical Simulation Center for BSN students in NURS 468.

✅ Hands-on learning included:
• Responding to a Code Blue emergency
• Understanding heart rhythms and 12-lead EKG basics
• Managing slow heartbeats (bradycardia) and fast rhythms (tachycardia)
• Performing advanced interventions, including pacing and cardioversion
• Working through scenarios involving cardiac arrest, restoring circulation and more

Hats off to our faculty for helping these future nurses build confidence and critical thinking for real-world emergencies. 💪
