When I first entered the field, I had the privilege of learning from my mentor, Albert Saparoff, creator of the Get High on Life program. Albert dedicated his life to helping others build self-esteem and explore alternative methods of healing. I was fortunate to have him join my treatment groups for over a year, where he shared his unique training in non-touch healing and “channeling the healing energy of the universe.” His impact was unforgettable, and one particular healing experience left us all amazed.
The picture a client painted of their current situation really impacted me. They felt like they didn’t match up to others, that people were judging them harshly, that they couldn’t meet their own expectations, that they were stuck in a nowhere job, and why did they always feel a sense of doom? When you are in such a rut as this, how can you get out of it?
It was inevitable that I’d write about the legal system. Doing Mental Health and Substance Use Evaluations for court proceedings pits one genre against another. The courts try to decide what is right or wrong, but according to Spiritual Psychology, there is no right or wrong, only learning. How do I survive my interactions with the legal system when I tend to lean toward the learning side?
Today’s topic is on using negative judgments towards other people and oneself to heal. Each person has 20,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day. How many of these thoughts are negative? We judge all the time! And if we are able to be aware of our negative judgments, we can start the healing process.
Trauma treatment needs to be handled carefully, or a person can be re-traumatized again and again. This has been happening to a person I am treating in family therapy, by their personal counselor. The old models of healing trauma can cause more trauma because, in an approach named Gestalt therapy, a patient is asked to relive the situation from as many angles as possible.
Our approach to Substance Treatment is different than 98% of the approaches out there because we focus on the core wounds underneath substance and mental health treatment. Ours is a program of empowerment, where people learn how to take charge of their innate power — and no, we are not powerless.
I have treated a lot of industry professionals who have bitten off more than they could chew, and I always recommend taking time off, using certain tools that help release the frustration or confusion of the day, or the times a client touches upon my unresolved issues that I haven’t processed through, and help them process through them. But as this weekend approaches, I am getting ready to follow my own advice and take care of numero uno — basically, myself.

Whether you're dealing with anxiety, trauma, depression, or simply feeling overwhelmed, you're not alone. Years ago, I learned the value of music in therapy when I was working at an independent living facility. This placement was for young adults with learning disabilities, and when I realized I wasn’t able to make any progress with them, I opted to have some fun singing karaoke. So, I set up the machine, began to sing, and one by one, all of the clients showed up, sang, and had the time of their lives! After two years, I finally found a way to connect with them, and from that point on, I made real progress. It was obvious from the start that music can open doors and truly help people who struggle with mental illness and substance abuse.
We do a fun exercise in our Intensive Outpatient Program called “The Wall.” Taken from Pink Floyd’s The Wall, our participants are asked to tell the group what stops them from living a happy and prosperous life. After each participant tells us their problem, we have them bring their chair to the front of the room, and it is stacked onto the others. Soon a large wall is formed, thus walling people off from their dreams. The major chairs represent addiction, being abused, neglect, lack of social support, but recently, one client told us his number one problem was boredom.
When the stormy days hit, when you don’t even like yourself, there are a few things you can do to get yourself through until you find that happy foothold again. Spiritually speaking, it is easy to be spiritual on the mountaintop. However, the real challenge is taking that spirituality into the valley.
