Good evening and Happy Tuesday. The countdown is on for the holiday season. Thanksgiving is 9 days away. Do you have your turkey brine? I have new made up right now. I also have wassail made up for your holiday drinks.

This is a time when we often times family traditions. Brining our turkey is one of our traditions for the last 13 years, whether we roast, deep fry or smoke our turkey we first put it in brine. It makes the most moist turkey ever. We also make butter for Thanksgiving and often times have fry bread for Thanksgiving.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas we drink wassail, the history behind wassailing is in early England they would toast the apple trees for the celebration of the harvest and a blessing for next years harvest.

I have new turkey brine and wassail all made up and ready for you to pick yours up.

Warm holiday blessings to you all.

Good afternoon and Happy Saturday.Early this week was the full Moon. It was the Beaver Moon. Why you ask was it the Beaver Moon. It is because this is the time of year that the Beaver seals its lodge marking the end of harvest and the beginning of hibernation

Beaver lodges are constructed by piling sticks, logs, mud, and rocks into a dome shape, which is typically built in ponds or on the banks of rivers. Beavers use their sharp teeth to fell trees and break down materials, then use their paws to pack mud to seal the walls and provide insulation. The finished structure has a living chamber above water and underwater entrances for protection from predators.

Beavers prepare for winter by building and reinforcing their lodges with mud for insulation and creating an underwater food cache of tree branches for sustenance. They do not hibernate but rely on their lodges for warmth and access their food stores by swimming through underwater entrances even when the water is frozen.

So, we should be taking lessons from the Beaver moon and start preparing for winter. Make sure your weather stripping is still in good shape. Do you have storm windows or is there another way to prevent drafts in your house? The news feed on my telephone said that winter is coming early and we should have arctic winds starting as early as November 10. Are your outdoor critters comfortable in cold weather?

So, I will leave you with one truism – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It is more comforting to know you are prepared than have to go out for something when the weather is inclement and products might be short on the shelves.

Stay warm, dry and cozy.

Good afternoon and Happy Tuesday! My son told me last night that he read there is only 100 days until Christmas. I just counted there is actually 93 days until Christmas. That means there will be only 85 days left for Moddejonge’s Herbals Brick and Morter store. I want to thank all of you who responded to my last post. You really touched my heart with the wonderful things that you said. I will hold a lot of memories of all of you and the shenanigans that we got up to through the last 13 years.

I will be keeping the Moddejonge’s Herbals face book page open for the foreseeable future so that we can still stay in contact. Yesterday was the Autumnal Equinox. This is a time to find balance in our lives and to prepare for the Winter season. That is one of the things that I am going to work on, a little more self-care, and some other projects. and getting prepared for the winter of my life.

Please come in sometime in the next 85 days to say farewell.

Blessings to you all.

Good afternoon and Happy Thursday! It is with mixed emotions that I am making today's post. I am closing Moddejonge’s Herbals. The last Day will be December 23. The store is no longer making a profit and I can no longer carry on. So, it is time for me to retire. I am looking at other options. I am going to keep this page running for a while. I am thinking about looking for a few online sales opportunities – the salves, some of the herbal teas, some of the cooking spices and maybe some magick. I will continue to do the moons and who knows maybe I will join the fair circuit.

I am also going to be selling my house and looking to move further into a more rural atmosphere. A little bit more room for my chickens and maybe get some goats. Give me some time and some space to live out my Little House fantasies.

For those of you who are loyal customers I am very happy to make some special orders of bulk products. If you want a pound of some herb or blend, I will special order it for you and sell it at a discounted price. Please give me time to get the order in before the end date. I am also planning to have some garage type sales of some of my books, store furnishings and Halloween decorations. I will post the dates for those later.

I want to thank you for your friendship and custom over the past 13 years. You have been an integral part of my journey, and I appreciate every one of you. Thank you.

Good afternoon and Happy Wednesday! Well, even though the Calendar says Fall arrives on September 22, I can smell the fall in the air. The air is a bit crisper in the morning and the lows this week will be 52-54. Some of the trees outside the shop are just beginning to show a change of color. I love the Fall season. I am beginning to collect some new soup recipes to try out and I am looking forward to a fire in the fireplace. I am bringing in some wood closer to the house and I am going to once again try to unplug one night a week by using oil lamps and the fireplace and reading a physical book instead of my e-reader. What are you doing to prepare for Fall? I am also going to take some drives on the weekend to see the Fall colors. I haven’t done that in a long time.

On a sad note, the shop will be closed on Saturday, 9/13 for a Celebration of Life for a friend. I will be better at posting this next week. Have a good day.
