World Tai Chi Qigong Day was initiated in 1999 and was recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) that same year.
Since then, it has been celebrated annually in thousands of cities across more than 80 countries. In Washington State, Governor Jay Inslee signed a proclamation in 2023 in support of this global event.
The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi (2013) has documented the scientific credibility of these practices. In 2020 Tai Chi was added to the USESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Following up in 2023, The Harvard Medical School Guide to Taichi’s author, Professor Peter Wayne, co-chaired the First International Conference on the Science of Tai Chi and Qigong as Whole-Person Health at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. This event brought together experts and researchers from around the world to explore the profound impact of Tai Chi and Qigong on health and well-being.
Additionally, Taichi will be included in the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, making a significant milestone in its global recognition. In August 2023, World Peace Federation created a Taichi promotional/publicity/campaign video inspired by the special cases from the Seminar titled "Maintain Campus Security and Protecting student Safety", held at Bellevue Library, in the state of Washington. As WHO defines health as "not merely the absence of disease or disability, but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being," this event aligns perfectly with that vision, fostering holistic wellness in our communities.

Spring Equinox of the Year of the Snake 2025: Seasonal Tune-up!
Spring Equinox of the Year of the Snake 2025 will arrive on Thursday, March 20, 2025. It marks the 4th solar term in China’s 24 Solar Terms.
During the 20-day period, people will celebrate Holi, St. Patrick’s Day and Eid al-Fitr in the United States.
March 17th, 2025 will be the 96th Chinese national TCM Festival which started on that same day in China in 1929.
March 18th, 2025 will be the 2nd "Chinese Medicine Day" in San Fransico, California since the introduction of TCM there in 1850.

This spring, Daylight Saving Time begins on March 9th shifting the clock one hour forward. Unlike the usual warm spring, this season is expected to be colder, with strong winds dominating the first half of the year and warmth settling in the later half. Before the equinox, symptoms may present as coldness in the lower right region of the body. After the equinox, people may experience internal heat, particularly in the middle region of the body.
Additionally, according to the CDC, cases of whooping cough and tuberculosis spiked in Arkansas at the end of last year, highlighting the need for vigilance in public health. Also, getting a Covid-19 vaccination is still recommended.
Do you know how this Spring Equinox may affect or influence your health? Please check out below.
Traditional Chinese Medicine accounts for specific balancing treatments in preparation for each season of the year. According to the Yellow Emperor’s Canon Internal Medicine (tr. by Nelson Liansheng Wu and Andrew Qi Wu, China Science & Technology Press, 1997), Chapter 1 entitled “On Human Preserving Health Energy in Ancient Times”, the Yellow Emperor asked of Qibo, the Taoist Master, “…people in ancient times could all survive to more than one hundred years old…What is the reason?” The Master answered: “Those who knew the way of keeping a good health [habit] in ancient times always kept their behavior in daily life in accordance with nature… They were able to modulate their daily life in harmony with the way of recuperating the essence and vital energy, thus they could master and practice the way of preserving good health.” This is further discussed in Chapter 2 “On Preserving Health in Accordance with the Four Seasons,” which explains that each of the four seasons is a preparation for the coming seasonal period. For example, ten days before or after Spring equinox March 20, would be ideal for patients to receive acupuncture treatment(s) in order to balance their vital energy for the summer season. This is especially important for those who were born in the year of the Snake, Pig, Tiger or Monkey. Even if one is feeling very healthy, it is a good practice to routinely maintain healthy habits.

Winter Solstice of the Year of the Dragon 2024: Seasonal Tune-Up!
The Winter Solstice of the Year of the Dragon 2024 will arrive on Saturday, December 21st. It follows the solar term Major Snow and marks the 22nd solar term in China’s 24 Solar Terms. During this 20-day time frame, the weather is expected to be characterized by a damp cold, with dampness being more prominent than the cold itself.
As we welcome the Winter Solstice, we’ll also celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve, creating a time of warmth, reflection, and joy.
This season’s intense cold recalls a story from over 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty. The legendary physician Zhang Zhongjing, known as the Medicine Saint, witnessed many of his family members succumb to extreme cold. This tragedy urged him to write his medical masterpiece, Shang Han Lun (Cold Damage Discussion). To treat frostbite, he also created “Jiao Er Tang” (Ear-Warming Soup), the precursor to today’s dumplings. Folk traditions honor him to this day by eating dumplings on the Winter Solstice.
There’s even a saying:
“If one does not hold a bowl of dumplings on the Winter Solstice, one’s ears will freeze off and no one will care.”
Eating dumplings has come to symbolize dispelling cold and keeping warm during this harsh time of the year.
Another Winter Solstice food tradition is eating wontons. A wonton is a different kind of dumpling having a different covering and shape. This custom is rooted in the concept of breaking the yin and releasing the yang. Wontons are thought to represent the chaotic state of the universe before the separation of yin and yang. By eating them on the Winter Solstice, when yang energy begins to grow, people symbolically break free from this enclosed, chaotic state and support the renewal of yang energy.

As we gather and celebrate, let’s stay vigilant about COVID-19 reinfection. While reinfections are often mild, severe illness can still occur. The CDC recommends staying up to date with vaccinations and continuing preventive measures:
• Wear a mask when necessary
• Maintain physical distancing
• Take regular tests if you feel unwell

Autumnal Equinox of the Year of the Dragon 2024 – Seasonal Tune-up!
The Autumnal Equinox of the year of the Dragon will arrive on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
It marks the sixteenth of China’s 24 Solar Terms. Together with the current fifteenth solar term, White Dew (Bailu), this period embraces a season of change and celebration. Notably, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sunday, September 15th . Shortly after, we will celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 17th , followed by China’s National Day on October 1st.

During this 20-day equinox time frame, the climate is expected to be unusually warm, contrary to the typically cooler temperatures of this season. This complicated factor creates a challenging weather environment that could negatively impact on our health. Therefore, it is essential to make appropriate adjustments.

According to the CDC, the “FDA approved and authorized the 2024-2025 mRNA COVID-19 vaccines on August 22, 2024. FDA authorized Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted (2024 – 2025 Formula) under Emergency Use Authorization on August 30, 2024.” (https://www.cdc.gov/covid/vaccines/stay-up-to-date.html). In light of the above information, it is crucial to continue prioritizing our health and well-being.

While the COVID-19 pandemic seems to linger, do you know how this Autumnal Equinox may affect or influence your health? Please review the following:

From what has been learned so far regarding the COVID-19, “the latest mutations of SARS-CoV-2 – specially KP.1, KP.2, KP.3 and their sub lineages – accounted for most infections in the United States as of the first week of August…” With COVID surging again, it’s important to stay informed and cautious. ( COVID is surging again. Here’s the latest on new variants, updated vaccines, and masking | AAMC )Though this autumn may be unusually hot, it’s essential to take precautions. Try to cool down naturally and avoid consuming cold and raw foods at least.

Summer Solstice of the Year of the Dragon 2024 – Seasonal Tune-Up!
The Summer Solstice of the year of the Dragon 2024 will arrive at 16:50 on June 21, 2024.
It is the 10th term, Xia Zhi (translated as Summer Solstice), of China’s 24 solar terms. Together with the current 9th term, Mangzhong, we are still experiencing the cold and damp weather.

On June 11th-12th, 2024, the First Overseas Master and Famous Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine awards were held in Vancouver Canada. Globally, there are 22 masters and 165 famous practitioners, totaling less than 200 individuals. In the USA here, there are 39 professionals.

After June 14th’s Flag Day, June 16th’s Father’s Day and June 17th’s Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, we will have Juneteenth Day on June 19th.

In this 20-day time frame of before and after Summer Solstice Day, the body is vulnerable. Since WHO declared the COVID-19 Global Pandemic outbreak on March 11, 2020, it’s been over four whole years of the struggling with it. Even if Covid-19 vaccines are available worldwide now and masks are no longer mandatory in most of the places in the USA, we still need to remain vigilant about new variants like KP.3, KP.2, as well as previous variants like JN.1. The pandemic has not been officially declared over, especially for those suffering from post-covid syndrome and complications such as long covid, etc. As the old saying goes, “Health is wealth.” When one has good health, one can work better physically, mentally and spiritually, making it easier to overcome the hardships from the recovery process.

However, ancient Chinese ancestors have given us thousands of years of great wisdom. If the internal Righteous Qi stays strong in our body, Evil Qi will not be able to enter and thrive. If internal Yin and Yang are balanced, no disease will be born. While many of us may be looking for new jobs due to large companies downsizing, others may be continuing to manage social distancing and masking while it is no longer required. Yet others may be planning summer travel, etc. and enjoying an ordinary normal life.

Winter Solstice of the year of the Rabbit 2023: Seasonal tune-up!
In 2023, the Winter Solstice of the year of the Rabbit arrives on Friday, December, 22nd.
The Winter Solstice is the 22nd term of China’s 24 solar terms. During this 20-day time frame of 10 days before and after, it contains the 21st term called “Major Snow”. After that, a warmer winter is coming, which is unusual. Many related unusual seasonal diseases may occur.
These may include Covid-19 variants such as HV.1, JN.1, etc. According to the CDC, all the eyes are on JN.1, which is the fastest-growing Covid-19 variant in the United States. It currently accounts for more than one-fifth of all infections in the U.S. with the symptoms of sore throat, congestion, headache, etc. Scientists are closely monitoring JN.1.

During this time frame, in Chinese culture, the Winter solstice is an important festival. After several thousand years of development, it has formed a unique seasonal food culture in Chinese cuisine such as dumplings. In fact, there are all kinds of customs throughout China that are not the same. In western countries, people celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Day. Therefore, because of the possibility of festive gatherings, it is recommended to take precautions.

Autumnal Equinox of the Year of the Rabbit 2023: Seasonal Tune-up!
The Autumnal Equinox of the year of the Rabbit 2023 will arrive on Saturday, September 23rd.
It is the 16th of China’s 24 solar terms. According to lunar calendar, before the Equinox Day, we will have a damp cold fall; after the Equinox Day, we will have a dry wind fall this year. This complicated factor creates a difficult weather environment. Therefore, it will have a negative impact on our health. Even if the pandemic warning has been dismissed (as of May 11, 2023) new COVID-19 variants are occurring again. Together with flu season, it will also be a challenge. The latest news reported that the FDA has endorsed updated COVID boosters for the fall virus season on Monday, September 11, 2023. These boosters will be available for Americans as young as 6 months old from Moderna and Pfizer due to increasing COVID hospitalizations and concerns about the spread of several new variants. It will be important to dress warmly, eat as healthy as possible, get a reasonable amount of consistent sleep and practice Taiji (aka Taichi) daily.

During this 20-day Equinox timeframe, there are several other celebrations. September 15th will be the first day celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month; the 16th will be Rosh Hashanah; the 25th will be Yom Kippur. World Tourism Day will be on September 27th; Confucius Day, which honors the greatest ancient Chinese educator, will be celebrated on the 28th and China's National Day will be celebrated on October 1st. Celebrating all these days will be another big challenge in both western and eastern cultures.

Prior to March, 2019, the biggest health challenge of the 21st Century was a phenomenon known as multimorbidity, that is, persons suffering from three or more simultaneous chronic conditions. However, the COVID-19 pandemic radically changed that. Its variants continue to present ongoing complications. Therefore, it is also important to continue wearing a mask in public and paying extra attention to frequent handwashing and social distancing even with the updated vaccine boosters.

Regarding the various stages of COVID-19, medical terminology has been evolving. As a review, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) refers to post COVID conditions as “long COVID”, “long-haul COVID”, “post-acute COVID-19”, etc. as recovering patients continue to suffer from ongoing symptoms. According to research published in The Lancet (2022), COVID-19 sequelae and its complications have become known as the most challenging health issue of the 21st century.

Given the current variants of COVID-19, do you know how this Autumnal Equinox may affect or influence your health? Please check out below.

Summer Solstice of the Year of the Rabbit 2023 – Seasonal Tune-up!
The Summer Solstice of the year of the Rabbit will arrive on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.
It will be the 10th solar term of the 24 China Solar Terms. Together with the current 9th solar term Mang-Zhong and Duan-wu on 22nd.
The Duanwu Festival is a traditional folk festival. It is celebrated on every lunar May 5th, which occurs in the solar calendar as June 22nd this year. It is one of the four grandest traditional festivals in China. Namely: the Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Qingming Festival. For over 2,000 years, Chinese people have commemorated Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), an ancient Chinese patriotic poet from the Warring States Period, by eating Zongzi. Also, on the same day, Chinese people take measures to prevent diseases and epidemics, and to ward off Evil Spirits by hanging Moxa leaves, wearing special perfume pouches, setting out Realgar wine for unwelcome rodents and insects, posting a portrait of another hero, Zhong Kui, etc. During the day, the major activity is dragon boat racing. There is also steam bathing: people often engage in steam bathing to sweat, cleanse, and relax their bodies. Some places may offer steam rooms or similar facilities for people to enjoy the experience. In certain regions, specific folk activities like collective dancing, flying kites, or organizing temple fairs may be part of the celebrations. Summer solstice coincides with the peak season for strawberries, which are known for their juiciness and sweetness. Many regions organize strawberry picking activities, allowing people to personally pick fresh strawberries and enjoy their delicious taste.
During the current summer solstice time frame, in the western part of the U.S., we will celebrate Flag Day on the 14th , Father’s Day on the 18th, the Federal holiday of Juneteenth on the 19th and Eid al-Adha on the 29th .
Summer solstice, like winter solstice, is an important folk holiday in China. It started from the Warring States era and was perfected during the Han dynasty. It is the time of the wheat harvest. Since ancient times, it has been customary to celebrate the harvest to make sacrifices honoring ancestors and to pray for a prosperous year. Eating noodles on this day is an important custom in many regions. There are many types of noodles in the south of China, such as yangchun noodles, dry soup noodles, shredded pork noodles, three fresh noodles, fried noodles, bridge noodles, sesame oil noodles, etc. However, in the north, there are braised noodles and fried noodles, etc. Because new wheat has appeared, eating noodles also means tasting new. There is a folk saying, “Winter wonton and summer noodle”.
Summer is the “fire” season. According to Chinese medicine, it is the season for heart care. During this year’s summer, the diet should be mainly aiming at clearing summer-heat and increasing the appetite, nourishing qi and quenching the thirst. Adding more bitter taste foods are recommended such as lettuce, kale, etc.
While the COVID-19 pandemic seems to linger, do you know how this Summer Solstice may affect or influence your health? Please check out below.

For example, ten days before or after Summer Solstice June 21, would be ideal for patients to receive acupuncture treatment(s) in order to balance their vital energy for the summer season. This is especially important for those who were born in the year of the Rabbit, Rooster, Rat and Horse. Even if you are feeling very healthy, it is a good practice to routinely maintain your health.
From what has been learned so far about the COVID-19 pandemic, especially “long covid”, even if most countries have had vaccines, boosters, testing, etc. for almost all ages, awareness of the symptoms and preventions should be addressed promptly. This summer will be mainly a combination of heat, dryness and cold. Everyone needs to take extra precautions. Try to avoid eating cold and raw foods at least, and practice Taiji.
