Our Story

Birth Matters NW was formed in 2014, a collaboration originally comprised of by Mariah Falin and Ildi Sebestyen. Together they recognized that by working together there was a greater capacity to serve new and expectant families. That the combined knowledge, experience, and approach benefited the families we serve, but our families as well. This not wholly new, but uncommon arrangement took off and Birth Matters NW enjoyed a steady, healthy growth. In 2016 they were nominated for and were not only Finalists but winners of the annual Parent Map Golden Teddy for (Outstanding) Birth and Postpartum Support, and have been Finalists for this in both 2017 and 2018! That same year both became members of the Swedish Doula Program, the first of it’s kind in Washington State. In 2017, Ildi took a sabbatical from practice as she welcomed a new addition to her family and eventually relocated out of state.

This year we are excited to expand our team and welcome two new doulas to the practice! Gina Cantatore of The Gentle Birth is a Childbirth International trained and certified birth doula and WA state licensed massage therapist who will begin seeing clients in partnership late this fall. She is also a new member of the Swedish Doula Program. We are also excited to welcome Krystal Ray-Jones as a DONA trained birth doula, CAPPA trained postpartum doula and IPPA trained and certified placenta encapsulator. Together, our unique team approach is here to support families in the greater Puget Sound area.

We believe this journey from start to finish is a unique and intimate experience. We believe that these intense experiences are spaces between significant markers in personal growth. We believe that every family should be empowered with knowledge and care for the best possible experience. We are committed to a compassionate and nurturing relationship in order to explore the options available not only through childbirth, but beyond. With us your doulas we strive to answer your questions with compassion, experience, and knowledge. No matter if it is your first child or fourth, we are committed to supporting your family.
