Did you know??? Today is Galentine's Day

Galentine's Day is a popular unofficial holiday celebrated on February 13th, the day before Valentine's Day, as a time for friends, especially women, to celebrate their platonic bonds. It's about showering female friendships with love, often with brunch, parties, gifts, or themed activities, focusing on empowerment and mutual support.

Happy Groundhog Day!

What is Groundhog Day? It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early. In 2025, the shadow was seen, auguring six more weeks of winter.

Did you know?

Increased social isolation and loneliness are associated with higher risks for health problems, such as depression; heart disease; and cognitive decline, which is a decrease in the ability to think, learn, and remember.

You can play an important role in helping the older adults in your life to stay socially connected. Here are some ways you can help:

Schedule daily, weekly, or biweekly phone calls or video chats.

Encourage them to seek out others with shared interests, such as through a garden club, volunteer organization, or walking group.

Stop in for a visit, even if it's for a few minutes. Walk around the building, visit in the living room, have a cup of coffee/tea. A short visit allows you to stay connect and helps seniors feel connected to community.

National Chocolate Day!

Dark chocolate offers benefits like improved heart health (lower blood pressure, better circulation), enhanced brain function (memory, focus), mood boosting (endorphins, serotonin), and antioxidant protection against cell damage, primarily due to rich flavanols, but moderation is key as it's calorie-dense, with benefits tied to high cocoa content (70%+).

Heart Health
Lowers Blood Pressure: Flavanols stimulate nitric oxide, relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow.

Reduces Disease Risk: May lower risk of stroke and heart disease by improving circulation and reducing clotting.

Improves Cholesterol: Can raise HDL ("good") and lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol.

Brain & Mood
Boosts Cognition: Flavanols increase blood flow to the brain, improving memory, attention, and processing.

Enhances Mood: Stimulates endorphin and serotonin release, acting as a natural antidepressant.
