A balanced meal plan designed specifically for dialysis patients.

A healthy diet can help you avoid complications on dialysis and better meet your nutrition needs. This plan won’t be for everyone as every person has their own individual needs and should always seek the advice of their kidney doctor and clinic dietitian.

This program is designed for dialysis patients and provides around 1650 calories per day on average.
It was created with the following key considerations:

🍎Potassium & Fiber
In kidney disease - especially when on dialysis - you often need to limit the amount of potassium in the diet. This meal plan provides close to ~2000 milligrams of potassium a day. Potassium is also found in many high-fiber foods. This plan provides sufficient potassium and fiber from a variety of foods in the right serving sizes.

Bone Building Nutrients
Phosphorus: Kidney disease can result in a buildup of phosphorus in the blood which can damage the body. This plan appropriately restricts the amount of phosphorus to less than 1,000 milligrams a day while providing close to adequate calcium and magnesium to create kidney-friendly food choices.

Sodium πŸ§‚
Limiting sodium in the diet can help control body water balance and blood pressure. This program meets the sodium limit with less than 2,000 milligrams of sodium daily.

Protein
Your protein needs are higher once you are on dialysis, however everyone has their own individual protein needs. This plan provides an average of 75 grams of protein a day from both fish and chicken and plant-based protein sources like tofu.

This 7 day meal plan includes:
* Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner + snacks
* Grocery List
* Recipes
* Nutrition Analysis for each day

Can dialysis patients eat chocolate?? Good question! Since chocolate is high in both phosphorus and potassium it is usually on the "do not eat" list.

Most of the common sources of chocolate out there in the form of candy bars and other milk chocolate candy offer no real health benefit and a lot of added sugar in addition to phosphorus and potassium.

Quality dark chocolate, however, has been shown to have a lot of potential health benefits. To find out if this is something you can include in your diet, check out my blog post "Can Dialysis Patients Eat Chocolate" 🍫

I don't know about you, but I really enjoy apples - especially this time of year 🍎 πŸ₯§. Besides being low in potassium, here are a few FUN APPLE FACTS:

* Apples are high in fiber. An average sized apple contains just as much if not more fiber as one serving of a fiber supplement. Why bother with supplements when you can eat a delicious apple?

* Some studies show that eating apples regularly may reduce your risk of cancer. This healthy fruit contains pectin, quercetin, and vitamin C, a natural antioxidant.

* There are more than 7,500 different apple varieties in the world! About 100 of these varieties are sold commercially in the U.S.

* If you’ve ever wondered why apples float it’s because 25% of their volume is actually air!

* Apples are available year round, but apple season is typically considered to be July through late November with September and October being the peak months.

Add some fun to your breakfast by making these yummy yet healthy apple muffins. The best apples for baking tend to be Granny Smith, Jonathan, Winesap, or Golden Delicious.

Enjoy! πŸ€—
