Can you believe it's been one whole year since we were thrown into teletherapy and many of us were anxiously taking the first bootcamp put on by SpeechTherapyPD.com?!? SOOO much has changed since then for 808 Speech... from having a fairly new (one year in) single-practitioner private practice to growing to a multiple-SLP group practice... from providing all face-to-face sessions to all teletherapy to slowly transitioning back to a handful of face-to-face sessions. It's been a year of constant learning, growth, and adapting and we couldn't be more grateful to our wonderful SLP community for providing and sharing so much knowledge and resources. We're now taking this reBOOT conference with a whole new perspective, sense of confidence, and focus on nuances that this past year has brought us.

A fun "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" activity modified from Mama Miss for my speech kiddos to celebrate Read Across America Day!

Printed, laminated, cut out, rounded corners, and attached Velcro clear fasteners (expensive but worth it!) to create a matching bingo-like game. Also used my white Uniball pen to darken the spots on my Super Duper dice, which I LOVE to use to get in more turns since it only goes up to three!

I was *just* thinking of making a graphic for this and saw For Goodness Speech, LLC's post.
I know parents are proud when their kiddos know all their colors, numbers, letters, and/or shapes... yet the focus should be on FUNCTIONAL CORE WORDS. I especially focus on functional nouns, verbs (actions), and putting them together in short verb+noun phrases. This leads to kiddos being able to use words for different communicative intents (want+cookie = request, stop+swing = command, no+food = cessation/refusal, etc.)
If a kiddo comes to me with all their colors and min-no core words, building upon what they know and incorporating that into therapy can help to increase their functional language. Request by adding "want" (want+blue), describe/identify by adding a noun (blue+bird), negate/refuse by adding "not"/"no" (not/no+blue), etc.

We're almost halfway through the first month of 2021 and I just realized I didn't do a New Year's post. 🙈 2020 was a year of extraordinary growth for me both personally and professionally. 🔥 I transitioned from part-time solo face-to-face SLP + part-time SLP at a healthcare facility + full-time Mom ➡️➡️➡️ part-time SLP teletherapist + full-time private practice owner blessed by a wonderful team of SLPs + full-time homeschool Mom (of twin 7th graders) + part-time learning coach (of a 10th grader) + full-time Mom! 💪 COVID has taught us to slow down, appreciate (and tolerate) each other, be grateful for our health and the health of our loved ones, be resourceful, explore new interests, connect in new ways, be flexible, and prioritize our health and the health and safety of everyone around us. 💕 Personally, I am happy and feel more balanced than ever. ☯️ Professionally, I am grateful and look forward to what 2021 has to offer. 🙏 THANK YOU for being part of my 808 Speech ohana... here's to a HEALTHY and HAPPY 2021! 🎉
