The Pleasure House


"Until the beginning of the previous century, the so-called "Pleasure House" sood here. One of the guests was Simon Bokivar, who stayed here in 1821. According to some sources, he wrote his famous "Manifesto of Cartagena" here."

The #1 ranked Trip Advisor Curacao Museum is the Kura Hulanda Museum. It opened in 1999 as part of an extensive redevelopment plan of Ostrobandu by the Dutchman Jacob Gelt Dekker.

Role of Curacao in the slave trade is a focus but only about 20-25% of museum exhibits. The museum collection actually begins with cuneiform tablets and discusses black history in the context of Ancient Egypt and Roman empires. Quality of museum items rivals any I have seen in NYC's Met Museum or anywhere else.

A must see attraction in the Otrobando section of Willemstad.

Named for the leader of the unsuccessful 1795 slave rebellion in Curacao, the Tula Museum presents history of ten slave rebellions in and out of Curacao.

Location is on the northern part of the island on the site of the firmer plantation where the uprising started.

What struck me was interplay between events on Curacao and others I am more familiar with.

Tula's 1795 rebellion occurred during the Haitian Revolution 1791-1804 which was ultimately successful.

Dutch emancipation of Curacao slaves on July 1, 1863 followed Lincoln's January 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation going into effect.

Curacao's May 30, 1969 riot occurred shortly after the Black Power movement started in the USA. It ended white control of political institutions, the recognition of the local Papiamentu as an accepted language, and introduced many other changes.

Today marks my 4th day of teaching yoga here at in Curacao.

The resort is one of Hyatt's all-inclusive properties with the Zoetry brand offering a smaller resort footprint with 2 story buildings on a small scale. Property is densely landscaped with a jungle feel of the type I experienced at Couples Swept Away in Jamaica.

Yoga is offered twice daily 9:30am and 5:30pm. Morning classes are taught near the pool/spa area. Afternoon classes alternate between meditation/yin and sunset yoga practices. For the latter we either walk or hop on a golf cart to relocate beachside at the sister Dreams property.

A benefit of staying at Zoetry is dual access to both Zoetry and Dreams properties. Zoetry has a small gym on the 2nd floor above reception (1st two gym photos) but Dreams offers a much larger gym space equipped with many machines not normally found at resorts. Five treadmills face the beach.

Only 15 minutes from the airport and 6 minutes from the very tourist friendly Willemstad, this resort offers plenty on and off- property activities. Locale is safe, no security guards with machine guns at the property perimeter.
