Officer’s Quick Thinking Stops Scam in Progress
Last week, off-duty SRO Linard stopped by Planet Liquor & Mart in Excelsior Springs for a sweet tea and spotted a potential scam. An elderly woman, holding a bank envelope with $6,482 in cash, handwritten notes, and her phone on speaker, was nervously attempting to use the Bitcoin machine. The caller was instructing her to deposit the money, claiming her bank account was compromised and would be “wiped out” unless she sent funds immediately.
Store attendant Callie also noticed the situation and exchanged a concerned glance with SRO Linard.
When approached, the woman was hesitant, saying, “He told me not to talk to anyone.” SRO Linard calmly identified himself as a police officer and explained she might be a scam target.
With Sgt. Craven’s backup, they reassured her, explained how these scams often target seniors unfamiliar with cryptocurrency, and urged her to return the money to her bank for safekeeping.
Thanks to SRO Linard, Sgt. Craven, and Callie’s sharp instincts, this community member from Trimble, MO, avoided a devastating financial loss.
A huge shoutout to Callie for her quick thinking and to our officers for their dedication to protecting our community, even off duty! 🙌
