It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to the beloved patriarch of our family, Leslie Cooper, who passed away September 17, 2021 at the age of 90. Whether you knew him as Leslie, Les, Tish, Tishy, Coop, Dad, Mr. Cooper, Grampa Coop, or Gumpy, he touched all our lives with his humor, wisdom, and caring.

Leslie was born on August 27, 1931, the son of William Parker Cooper and Marion Estelle (Gilmore) Cooper. A life-long resident of Exeter, he was a 1949 graduate of Exeter High School where he was active in athletics and the performing arts.

He attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1953 with a major in history. Drafted near the end of the Korean War, he served in the United States Army as a stevedore in Goose Bay, Labrador and at Fort Eustis, Virginia. After his honorable discharge from the service he returned to the University of New Hampshire where he earned his Master’s in Education.

On January 8, 1955 he married Suzanne Elizabeth Maher, with whom he had four children: George Leslie, Cathy Sue, Nancy Elizabeth, and John Edward. He worked multiple jobs supporting the family.

After teaching briefly at the Watson Academy in Epping, he became a social studies teacher at Hampton Academy Junior High School, where he impacted the lives of a generation and a half of students. While we hope he imparted to them his love of history and world cultures, we are sure that he instilled in them the values of humor and compassion.

On September 28, 1973 he married Nancy Jean Rollins, with whom he would spend the rest of his life. They had one child together: Christopher Michael. There were many happy times at Wells Beach, Maine; at their timeshares in North Conway, Ormond Beach, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and with friends and relatives in Exeter, Virginia, and Vermont.

Always involved in his children’s interests, he made many trips to hockey games and license plate collector conventions. He loved watching New England sports, and family gathered to watch important games with him.

A voracious reader, Leslie was a regular patron of the Exeter Public Library, from which he borrowed numerous books each week. He could be found most days with country music playing on the cable TV station while he read this week’s borrowed mystery, science fiction, or history books.

He enjoyed local and family history, researching and writing about topics such as the life of his mother, Marion Gilmore, and local 19th-century baseball player Tim Shinnick. He compiled a significant collection of Exeter postcards, some of which are featured in the book Postcards from Exeter.

He had a life-long love of the game of chess and of poetry. In his early years, his mother Marion sent his poems to the Exeter News Letter and some were published under his childhood nickname “Tishy” Cooper. In his last years he began writing poetry again, to his family’s delight.

In addition to his parents, Leslie was predeceased by his older brother, William Parker Cooper, Jr. and his grandson, Todd Leslie Warren. He leaves behind Nancy, his loving wife of 47 years; his children, George (Leslie), of South Portland, Maine, Cathy (Chip) Boardman of Burnt Hills, New York, Nancy Berlind of Dover, New Hampshire, John (Donna), of Exeter, and Christopher (Amanda) of Exeter; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren. and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of traditional remembrances, please consider donating to the Exeter Public Library or Exeter Historical Society in Leslie’s name.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jamal Mobed, M.D., age 88 of Brentwood, NH. Jamal passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021 peacefully surrounded by family and a tremendous amount of love. Passing on Father’s Day was fitting and symbolic of his role as Patriarch of our family.

Jamal was born on February 9, 1933,in Rezaiyeh (now Urmia) West Azerbaijan province, Iran. The youngest son from a prominent Iranian family. He was the youngest of nine siblings, four brothers and four sisters.

Jamal graduated with a Medical Degree from the University of Tehran, Iran in 1958. On his own, with $100 in his pocket, he made the 7,000 mile journey to the United States. He would tell stories of renting a room at the local YMCA.

In 1961, Jamal married, and they had three children. Through the years, they had lived in Iran and Massachusetts. In 1967, he joined the medical staff at Worcester Hahnemann Hospital, Worcester, Massachusetts. In November of 1969, after becoming board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Jamal was offered a position at Worcester Hahnemann Hospital with privileges in both obstetrics and gynecology. In January of 1971,Jamal Mobed became a United States citizen. It was in Worcester, MA that he worked in private practice as an OB/GYN for the next 45 years. During this time, Jamal literally delivered thousands of babies. Back in the day, patients would have Jamal’s home phone number and call 24/7 for all of their medical needs. His patients were like family.

In addition to his passion for medicine, Jamal had a passion for learning and a thirst for knowledge. In his spare time, he would read encyclopedias and periodicals. A dictionary by his bedside at all times. He was a lover of old classic movies including westerns. Johnny Guitar was a favorite. He was an animal lover. Jamal loved to garden and had many magazine worthy flower beds. He planted flowers, fruits and vegetables. He was a lover of nature. He loved standing in the rain under a good thunderstorm. He loved the views and peace of the mountains and ocean. Jamal had an antique Cadillac Sedan Deville that he drove with pride. He was able to showcase his car in the local 4th of July parade.

Jamal was a gifted physician, possessed a green thumb, but nothing could ever compare to his love and devotion for his family. Jamal was involved in his grandkids' lives. It was not uncommon for him to try to climb in the kids' bounce house, play hide and seek, sing a song and dance with the kids. We enjoyed weekly family dinners at his home.

Jamal will be missed by many, but most especially by his three children, daughter and son in law and six grandchildren., Ret. Capt. Jeffrey N Mobed USN and wife Desiree, David A Mobed, Rep. Melissa A Litchfield and husband Brad, and six grandchildren, Lt David Mobed USN, Nathan Mobed, Alex Litchfield, Emily Litchfield, Hollee Litchfield, and Jake Litchfield.

Christopher Wheeler of Hampton NH passed away suddenly and unexpectedly early Sunday morning. Chris was forever dedicated to his wife and children, Trish, Emily, and Charlie. His passing is an unfathomable loss to his family and friends.

Chris was nothing less than the best at what he set out be; husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, coach, teammate, and colleague. He was the finest example of the proverbial good guy and endlessly had a knack for knowing and doing the right thing.

Chris loved his life and everything in it. This is no surprise, as he invariably understood where he needed and wanted to go in life, did whatever was needed to get there, while enjoying every step of the journey and the successes he so well deserved . His accomplishments were diverse and innumerable, with family always remaining the center and focus of his life.

For all who knew Chris, there are many stories and memories which they will hold dear and will bring a smile to their face. At this difficult time, the family finds comfort in hearing and holding onto as many of these memories and stories as possible, and invites you to email them to rememberingchriswheeler@gmail.com .

As soon as it can be arranged, there will be a celebration of Chris’ life. The stories, memories, and pictures you send will be woven into the service. The family will get the word out through all available means once the plans are complete.
