With this single-arm table top stretch, you should feel the lengthening under your arm and down the side of your body. It gently challenges the core and your opposite arm, as you maintain a level top line and resist rotation through the upper body.

...and then you remember that time your LMT told you the body doesn't work in isolation! Compensations, trick movements, repetitive movements, and muscle imbalances in one part of the body can influence how another part moves and feels.

I have rotation through my ribs and pelvis, most likely caused (or worsened) by carrying my children exclusively on the left side. Unwinding that rotation and correcting the position of my ribcage will allow my shoulder blade to glide correctly. Just one piece of my chronic pain puzzle!

Pain perception happens in the brain (and NO, that does not mean it's "just in your head," or that it isn't real!), so one of my first steps in addressing pain is calming the nervous system!

Anxiety, stress, and fear all contribute to pain, which is why clear communication and informed consent about what will happen during your massage is so important to me. It's also why I encourage you to reach out with questions even before you come in!

One of my favorite shoulder mobility moves is a banded "dislocate." It moves the joint through a nice range of motion while also opening up the frontline. When you try this, you might not be able to bring your arms fully behind your back -- some of you may not even get above your head. That's ok! Take it as far as you can without creating pain. If you practice daily, I bet you'll be surprised with the advancements you make (ask me how I know 🙂).
