How is executive functioning treated?

Executive Functioning disorder can be treated in a multitude of different ways. Some approaches include behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT helps kids manage behavior and find strategies to regulate emotions. It also helps people replace negative behavior with positive ones. What does dysfunctional executive skills look like in children?

Trouble with executive function can present in different ways. Children may have challenges with learning ,retaining information, and paying attention in school. Lack of executive functioning can also impact children socially when they have trouble keeping track of their belongings or organizing their thoughts in conversation. A diagnosis of ADHD and difficulty with executive functioning overlap, which makes paying attention, following directions, and managing one’s time a struggle. Having trouble with executive functioning does not mean that if a child struggles with executive functioning he is lazy or not smart. People who struggle with these skills are just as smart as other people. They just need alternate strategies to manage their time, ways to utilize different learning modalities, and a plan to regulate their emotions.
