Save this🫶🏻 and use it to help build communication confidence safely!

When I stopped worrying about how parents would react, I sopped beating around the bush when sharing my clinical judgments and just SAID IT.

This lead to:

👉🏼less confusion
👉🏼more respect
👉🏼more trust
👉🏼better buy in
👉🏼better support for the child

It was a win win all around.

So many SLPs don’t know how to say what they need to say about stuttering because they don’t know WHAT to say in the first place.

Let me help you change that.

Comment “TRUST” if you want a better way to talk to parents of kids who stutter!! 👇🏼👇🏼

“Great job!” doesn’t just mean “do more of THAT”, it quietly means, “do LESS of its opposite”.

This is all well and good until what you’re asking the person to do less of, is actually PART of him or her.

Part of how they talk.

Engrained in their neurophysiology.

Weaved into their identity.

(Yes, I’m talking about stuttering.)

Praising fluency isn’t behavior shaping or whatever else you think it is. It’s so much more when you’re reading between the lines.

And people who stutter are experts at reading between the lines. Trust me.

If you’re an SLP and you want to learn more about how to shift away from fluency work and toward something better, comment “CHANGE”. 🫶🏻

Not all coping skills are created equal.

Some push you closer to your goals and values,

and some pull you farther away.

If the coping skills used to manage stuttering are leading a person father away from themselves, are they healthy?

Are they affirming?

Are they person-centered?

If we are to be truly stutter-affirming and person-centered in our practices, our messages has to be clear and consistent.

And that all starts with YOU as the SLP.

Doors to Stuttering Therapy Academy are open for just one more week!!!

Comment “JOIN” for the last chance to learn how to help kids cope with stuttering in a healthy way❤️

What coping skills do your kids who stutter use currently?

So excited to receive this seal of recognition motion from ! Under the mentorship of , I’ve learned SO much about how to best support pre schoolers, school aged children, teens and adults who stutter. As I said to Victoria- stuttering therapy has made me a better person, teaching me about all the ways we can fully accept ourselves, rely of our own resilience, and regulate the emotions of ourselves and help others to do the same. The goal is not fluency, the goal is communication!

As we are gearing up to go back to school, you may see increased stuttering in your child's speech.

One of the innate features of stuttering is it's variability. Changes in speech are natural as changes occur in a child's environment - do not fret. Support your child as best you can by following these tips:

1) Be patient and wait for your child to get their point across - don't interrupt
2) Focus on what they are saying, not how they are saying it
3) Ask them how they need to be supported with the start of the school year
4) If your child is too young to advocate for themselves, do it for them. Talk to their teachers to make sure they are supported properly throughout the school year.
