👓 How Often Should You Update Your Glasses or Contacts Script?
Your eyes are always evolving, and while some of us have stable vision year after year, others experience more frequent shifts. Here’s what you should know:
1. AOA recommends annual eye exams for most adults (ages 18–64)
The American Optometric Association now advises yearly in-person eye and vision exams, not just to update your script, but to screen for over 270 systemic and ocular conditions like diabetes, glaucoma, and early signs of cancer.
2. Prescription scripts typically last 1–2 years,
While prescriptions generally remain valid during this period, that doesn’t guarantee your vision hasn’t shifted. Factors like age, health issues, or lifestyle changes can lead to prescription changes any time, from every few months to every couple of years.
3. Vision may change sooner (or later) than expected
• Kids and teens often need more frequent updates due to growth and development
• Adults 40+ might develop presbyopia or eye conditions that mandate closer monitoring and more frequent prescription tweaks
• Underlying health issues like diabetes, hormonal swings, and even medications or screen fatigue can also nudge your vision off course .
• 4. Trust your eyes (literally!)
Sudden symptoms, like headache, blurry vision, squinting, or eye strain, deserve prompt attention. While some slight Rx changes might feel minor, they can still make a difference in comfort and clarity .
