Tamai was born and raised in the small farming community of Oxnard, California. He completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was named to the Dean’s list for three consecutive years. Dr. Tamai earned his medical degree in 1985 from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following graduation he continued his education with an internship at St. Francis Medical Center (University of Illinois) in Peoria, IL and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX

Dr. Tamai arrived in Fairbanks in 1992 to assume a position as Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon at Bassett Army Community Hospital on Fort Wainwright. At the conclusion of his military service he began working at Tanana Valley Clinic from 1993 through 2005. Dr. Tamai left TVC to hold a position with Advanced Medical Centers of Alaska for the next four years as an Orthopaedic Surgeon before beginning his own solo practice, Orthopaedic Surgical Associates, LLC in 2009 until present.
