The lumbar is composed of 5 vertebrae in the lower part of the spine. With aging or developmental conditions, the spinal canal in this region can narrow, compressing the nerves traveling into the lower back and legs. This condition is known as lumbar spinal stenosis. Symptoms may include cramping in the calves when walking, pain shooting into the thighs and legs, sometimes called sciatica; and weakness, numbness or pain in the buttocks, legs and calves.
Treatment using non-surgical methods is usually the first approach. Surgery may be recommended if there is progressively severe pain or the numbness and weakness accelerate. There are different surgery options with the surgeon determining which is most appropriate for the condition. Minimally-invasive surgery, conducted on an outpatient basis, can be effectively used for some patients to decompress areas of the stenosis, relieving the pain caused by the pinched nerves.
