How it started/ how it’s going. Proudest dad on earth brought his then infant baby daughter in for his appointment. Today he came in for a re-up on his retainers with his now 7 y.o. daughter. Isn’t she lovely!?!? Time waits for no one! This is a FAMILY business!!! Smile…it’s just life!!!

Had dinner with two of my favorite patients. Dr. Erika Venn & Dr. Chantai Harris.

Dr. E. Venn has been leading Smile Studio Kids with experience and expertise for nearly 3 years presenting a standard of care in the community around the office that is unparalleled.

Dr. Chantai Harris was one of my first patients at Smile Studio Orthodontics. She has inspired me as one of her mentors as she blazes her trail into the pediatric dental space, reminding me of why I am passionate about and blessed to be a dentist (orthodontist). You may remember me attending her white coat ceremony some years ago.

The full circle moment was when we actually all worked under the same roof at our flagship facility in Fairburn earlier last year. Dr. Harris went from patient to treating doctor in the same practice. 👊🏿

4 HBCU’s represented here: Meharry, Howard, Spelman, and Alabama State. Representation matters in the delivery of healthcare and can alleviate misplaced anxiety. We might be the conversation you need to make sense of a dental concern of yours.

Talking to my cousin last week I casually mentioned, “I watched the King Center get built everyday at school”, speaking on the mundane yet epic things that make Atlanta so special in so many ways. My first school, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, was situated at the corner of Auburn Ave and Boulevard. It was 3 doors down from the house Dr King grew up in and across the street from the King Center. From the playground and from our K-1 classrooms we watched the King Center get built. Auburn Ave was referred to as Black Wall Street as well in its heyday early in the 20th century and was where Atlanta’s first black millionaire started his insurance company. What a fertile place for young people to grow, develop, and see representation in so many aspects of life. Glad to be able to walk the blocks with nostalgia today. We’ll be back at it tomorrow in the office. Happy Birthday Dr. King and may your legacy live on forever.

No, you d’man! Our first full braces case at our Carrollton office finished today. We’ve finished a number of aligner cases here but he is our first case we’ve finished with braces. No one reps harder for all Atlanta and Georgia teams than this guy. Now he has a smile to match the enthusiasm. Smile…it’s just life!!

August is off to a GREAT start! The dedication, attention to detail, and completion of the assignment to run me my coins is not lost on me. I count this towards the fruit of our labor (albeit small) that contributes to the greater pool that supports our families and keeps the ship afloat. I am sincerely grateful! SERIOUSLY! Help is on the way!! The next generation of great dentists, pediatric dentists, and orthodontists are on their way!!! Today I had the pleasure of having a 3rd year student from the best dental school in the land Meharry Medical College) spend some time in the office as she shapes and envisions the career she will be pursuing in orthodontics. Sharp as whip! I was very impressed with this young lady.

Yesterday one of my very first patients (now a Meharry grad) worked in our office on the Smile Studio Kids side caring for the little ones needing sedation to complete their dental work. My heart is FULL!! - Tyus - IYKYK

Last weekend we gave our beloved Ms. Dorothy her flowers, celebrating her retirement. She has knit her sweet and gentle spirit into the fabric of our office for 15 years and 4 months. She is the second employee of our practice and the first to retire from Smile Studio Orthodontics. We can not replace her! She has tiny feet but enormous shoes that will be hard to fill. I’m not sure that we can even sum up her job description completely. Her most valued role has been that she is everyone’s favorite aunty. Listening, praying for, helping, and comforting everyone in her path (co-worker and patient alike). Too often the strong and peaceful people don’t get their flowers. This ain’t one of those instances. We had a grand time showering Ms. Dorothy with gifts, favorite stories, and tears. Job well done! Enjoy a full life on your terms!! We will miss you…and LOVE YOU!!
