You may have heard the saying that eating disorders don’t discriminate – they affect people of all ages, genders, classes, ethnicities and sexual orientations. But did you know that student athletes are at a greater risk of developing disordered eating habits?
It’s true. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), one in four student athletes develop an eating disorder. The pressure to maintain a certain weight, shape and/or size, coupled with the need to “win,” outperform competition and advance to the next level, has shown to be highly influential toward athletes. This often prompts various behavioral changes (for example, eating and exercising habits) to achieve desired outcomes.
