Eye care is not just about the eyes. This is why it is so important to see an Ophthalmologist (EyeMD) for proper medical diagnosis and treatment.

A 12-year-old girl presented with chronic recurrent bilateral eyelid lesions, intermittent dysphagia, and oligomenorrhea. Examination showed a right upper eyelid pedunculated “woody” conjunctival membrane and left lower eyelid nodule surrounded by pseudomembrane. Ligneous conjunctivitis was confirmed with low plasminogen antibody and activity levels and a homozygous c.112A>G mutation in the PLG gene. Intravenous plasminogen infusions led to prompt resolution of eyelid lesions, dysphagia, and restoration of her menstrual cycle. Plasminogen deficiency type 1 is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, causes mucosal pseudomembranes in multiple organ systems, and may require systemic treatment.

Celebration Saturday! 🌟🌟🌟

Sara’s decision to say yes to this program has allowed her to lose 121 pounds. She is thrilled to slip into size 6 jeans instead of a size 22. Physical changes are wonderful, but the real victories are reclaiming her confidence, feeling like herself again, believing in herself, and living life front and center, no longer on the sidelines.

The importance of regular eye exams! 👁️

An 85-year-old woman presented with an elevated pigmented conjunctival lesion in the inferior fornix, which was noted 6 weeks prior. She refused intervention or follow-up. She returned 2 years later with enlargement of the lesion, hemorrhage, and an inability to close her eye. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a 12 × 20 mm heterogenous lesion without scleral extension. After lengthy discussion, she elected for debulking and cryotherapy only. Pathology revealed conjunctival melanoma. She opted against staging or scheduled surveillance. A recurrent lesion was identified at POM2, but she declined further intervention. She passed away 9 months after the debulking surgery.
