Toddlers are tough, but their bones are still growing and more prone to breaks.

If your toddler has a fall and won't bear weight, uses a limb less, or has swelling, you need to get it checked out. Even small fractures can affect growth if untreated.

If your child experiences a non-life-threatening fall over the weekend or after hours, don’t forget we have a 24-7 nurse line that can connect you with one of our providers at the Virginia Pediatric Group. Call our office’s main line to be directed to the nurse line.

When your toddler has diarrhea, here’s what you can do:

- Keep them hydrated - offer small sips of water or oral rehydration solution.

- Avoid sugary drinks and juices.

- Continue feeding them bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, but add some good protein such as baked skinless chicken.

Call us if it lasts more than 2 days, there's blood in the stool, or signs of dehydration.

Weaning is the process of transitioning your baby off breast milk, and it's as emotional as it is physical.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, then continuing with breast milk alongside solid foods until at least 12 months, and beyond, as long as it's mutually desired by mom and baby.

How you wean is a personal journey. Some moms start by dropping one feeding at a time every few days or weeks. Others follow baby’s cues for a gradual, natural process. Things to consider include your baby’s readiness, your comfort, and any physical symptoms like breast engorgement during the transition.

Whether you’re just thinking about weaning or in the thick of it, remember there’s no one right way.

The providers at the Virginia Pediatric Group want to partner with you to guide you through a weaning process that fits best for you and your baby’s needs.

Call today to schedule an appointment.

Well visits are an important part of keeping your child healthy, especially during the early years when growth and development happen fast.

In the first two years of life, your child will be seen more frequently, and after age 3, they’ll typically have a well visit once a year, along with any additional visits when needed.

Your child won’t get vaccines at every visit, but immunizations are an important part of preventive care. Your provider will help you understand what vaccines are recommended and when, based on your child’s age, medical history, and current guidelines.

These visits also include screenings to support your child’s development, behavior, and emotional well-being. Some visits may include hearing or vision screens starting in early childhood, depending on your child’s age and your pediatrician’s protocols.

Have questions about what to expect at upcoming visits, or what immunizations your child might need? Give our office a call to speak with a member of the team.

Wondering if it’s normal your newborn hasn’t p**ped today?

Newborn p**ping patterns vary. In the early weeks, all babies tend to stool every day. As your infant gets older (usually around 1 month of age), they may begin to have changes in their stooling frequency. Breastfed babies can go up to 7 days without stooling while formula fed babies tend to stool every 3-5 days. What matters most is stool consistency and comfort.

Call us if your baby seems uncomfortable, has a hard belly, refusing feeds, or projectile spitting.

Our providers at the Virginia Pediatric Group are here for those “is this normal?” questions.

Not sure if it's a bite or a sting?

Here’s a quick guide:

- Bug bites: usually small, red, and itchy. Common with mosquitoes or ants.

- Stings: often more painful with immediate swelling. Watch for allergic reactions like difficulty breathing or hives. Anaphylaxis reaction to insect sting should be seen in the emergency room for immediate care.

Call us if swelling spreads rapidly, your child has a fever, or the site looks infected.

Most insect bites will not get infected until 3-5 days after the bite.

If you are unsure if your child needs to be seen, send us a picture through your child’s secure portal for a provider to take a look
