Meet Evelin—a longtime PSV patient, current PSV student shadow, and the founder of Kits for Kids, an organization she started in summer 2024 to bring comfort and joy to children facing cancer and other medical challenges. Inspired by her grandmother’s battle with cancer and her own experiences at PSV, Evelin turned her gratitude into action by creating care kits and organizing donations for kids who need it most.

For the past four months, Evelin has been shadowing PSV providers across the ASC, Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD), orthopaedics, and neurology departments, gaining firsthand insight into the compassion and expertise behind pediatric care. And recently, she and her Kits for Kids team delivered a special toy donation to PSV’s CCBD—bringing smiles to patients and families when they need it most.

We’re so proud to be part of Evelin’s story and can’t wait to see all the lives she’ll continue to touch.

Congratulations to Rachel Woods—a University of Virginia undergraduate and longtime scoliosis patient of PSV Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Laurel Blakemore—on presenting her research at UVA's Undergraduate Research Symposium!

As a Summer 2025 intern with PSV’s Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Department, Rachel drew from her own experience with bracing and spinal fusion to study how well caregivers understand key information after their child’s initial scoliosis diagnosis. With guidance from Dr. Blakemore and PSV Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Benjamin Martin—and support from Khayla Easley, PSV Clinical Research Coordinator, who played a key role in ensuring the accuracy of the collected data—she assessed caregiver–physician alignment on diagnosis type, curve magnitude, expected progression, and treatment recommendations to identify where miscommunication is most likely to occur.

Her goal: strengthen communication, support shared decision-making, and improve the experience for families navigating scoliosis. Rachel plans to continue sharing her research at future pediatric and orthopaedic conferences and has recently been accepted to present at an international spine meeting this spring.

We’re so proud of her passion, insight, and contributions to advancing scoliosis care—way to go Rachel!
