Creating Safety in the Play Therapy Room through the Lens of Polyvagal Theory

The key to connection is safety. Our nervous system is the foundation for safety, connection, and social engagement and especially important for play therapy clients. This training will introduce an understanding of the Polyvagal Theory based on Stephen Porges’ work and how it impacts connection, communication, and relationships. The ventral (front) side of the vagus nerve responds to cues of safety in our environment and interactions. It supports feelings of physical safety and being safely emotionally connected to others in our social environment. The dorsal (back) side of the vagus nerve responds to cues of danger. This training will help identify your play therapy clients Autonomic nervous system and help inform how you work with play therapy clients.
Learning Objectives:

· List the 3 principles of the Polyvagal Theory

· Define the Social Engagement System and its importance in play therapy and relationships

· Name the 4 Rs of a Polyvagal approach to play therapy

· Identify the 3 states of the Autonomic Nervous System

· Recognize the primary/current state of your play therapy client (s) and yourself

· Demonstrate at least 3 different play therapy interventions that can be used in play therapy and promote social engagement

About the Presenter:

Amy Reamer, LMFT, RPT-S is passionate about helping others heal their hearts from past hurts. She has personal and professional experience with adoption, developmental trauma and other developmental disabilities. She is a self-proclaimed "brain geek" and continuously finds fun ways to incorporate the latest neuroscience research into evidence-based practices specializing in the effects of early trauma or neglect on the brain and the best ways to help families by empowering connections and co-regulation. She is the owner/founder of Heart & Mind, a group practice in the Richmond, VA area, author of "Toby the Tiger Tamer" and the developer of the Tame Your Tiger Brain Training Program. Amy enjoys providing workshops, supervising therapists in play therapy and for licensure as a MFT in VA and consulting with others in the areas of adoption, developmental trauma, Polyvagal Theory and the Safe and Sound Protocol.

APRIL PLAY THERAPY TRAINING!

Families That Play Together, Stay Together:
Using Family Play Therapy Techniques

Including parents in the play therapy process can often be difficult. Parents often don’t understand the value of play or why they should be involved in the process. This training will discuss the challenges of working with parents and how to engage them in play therapy, do play therapy assessments and how to improve communication with family members through play. This is a beginner/Intermediate Training.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe how to explain and involve parents in play therapy.
2. Demonstrate 2 techniques to engage families in play therapy.
3. List 2 play therapy assessment techniques to use for assessing family dynamics.
4. Explain 2 play therapy activities to promote improved communication with family members.
