Why should pregnant women get a flu shot?

Influenza (flu) is more likely to cause severe illness in pregnant women than in women of reproductive age who are not pregnant. Changes in the immune system, heart, and lungs during pregnancy make pregnant women (and women up to two weeks postpartum) more prone to severe illness from flu, including illness resulting in hospitalization. Flu also may be harmful for a pregnant woman's developing baby. A common flu symptom is fever, which may be associated with neural tube defects and other adverse outcomes for a developing baby. Getting vaccinated also can help protect a baby after birth from flu. (Mom passes antibodies onto the developing baby during her pregnancy.) However, it is recommended that women who will be pregnant during flu season get the shot. Pregnancy can increase your risk for complications from the flu.

It is also safe to get the flu shot while breastfeeding your baby. The flu shot cannot cause your nursing baby to get sick.

Top Tips for Pregnancy Nutrition

Dedicated to Providing State-of-the-Art Comprehensive Pregnancy Care and Delivery.

https://www.cwcvirginiaobgyn.com/blog/what-foods-should-i-avoid-eating-during-pregnancy

Good nutrition during pregnancy improves your chances of having a healthy baby. It may even reduce the risk of certain chronic conditions in your child, long after he has grown.

Eating for Two During Pregnancy

Whether you waited months for a positive pregnancy test or this pregnancy took you by surprise, you'll probably need to make over your eating habits. Many women begin pregnancy with shortfalls of nutrients central to a healthy pregnancy, including iron, calcium, and brain-building fats.

Focus on Folic Acid During Pregnancy

Getting adequate folic acid is one way of helping your child become the healthiest person possible. During the first month of pregnancy, folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects, including spina bifida.

Be sure to take a daily multivitamin with 400 micrograms folic acid until you replace it with a prescription prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement. Choose grains fortified with folic acid, including breakfast cereals, breads, rice, and pasta, every day too.

What Is a Self-Breast Exam?

https://www.cwcvirginiaobgyn.com/services/breast-exam

What is a self-breast exam?

All women who are 20 years of age and older should perform a breast self-exam each month. This should be done two to three days after you have completed you monthly period cycle or on the same date every month if you happen to no longer have periods. Monthly breast self-exam will help you to learn the way that your breasts normally look and feel and it also allows you to notice if there happens to be any changes. The following changes should immediately be reported to your health care provider. If you happen to develop breast cancer, these are precancerous signs to keep a lookout for:

- A new lump in or near the breast or under your arm
- Thickening or swelling on part of your breast
- Irritation or dimpling of the skin on your breast
- Redness or flaky skin on or around the ni**le or breast
- Pain in the ni**le area
- Ni**le discharge other than breast milk, occurs without squeezing
- Any change in the size or the shape of the breast
- Pain in any area on the breast

Please do keep in mind that some of these warning signs can occur with other possible conditions that are not cancer but should be discussed with your doctor to make sure.

Breast Cancer in Young Women

https://www.cwcvirginiaobgyn.com/services/breast-exam

"Breast cancer doesn't just happen to someone that's 75 years old," says breast cancer survivor Charity. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 27, she made a series of decisions to be proactive about her health.

"You need to take your health seriously. Talk to your doctor. There isn't just one face to breast cancer."

Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age. Knowing your risk of breast cancer can empower you to take action to manage it.
