Senior Helpers of Fairfax

Senior Helpers of Fairfax We specialize in providing Personal and Companion Care to individuals who wish to maintain independen Service starts on the pre-determined date.

History -

Senior Helpers was founded by Tony Bonacuse with the help of Peter Ross after their firsthand experience in caring for their respective family members. From their experience, Tony and Peter saw a huge gap that was not being filled properly by the other companies providing care for the elderly in the market. In dealing with these other caregivers, they found that either they couldn’t get

caregivers to answer their inquiries or that the companies that would respond left something to be desired in their level of professionalism. It was clear to them that someone needed to address these deficiencies – the result being Senior Helpers. Using Peter as a sounding board, Tony set out to create an organization that would be a trusted leader in senior care, and that would provide the type of professionalism he found to be lacking in other organizations. Tony opened the first Senior Helpers office in Baltimore, MD in 2002 to gauge the potential need for such an organization. As it turns out, there were many others who identified with the services and needs that Senior Helpers filled. Senior Helpers began building a reputation for itself as a professional organization with a dedicated staff of caregivers. The Baltimore location was a success and it was evident that other locations could be, too. Expansion began in 2004 with Peter joining Tony full time, opening an additional office in Orange County, CA. With the success of the Senior Helpers system on both coasts came increasing demand. Tony and Peter began to look into franchising as an option to bring Senior Helpers to the next level. After building a strong reputation over the years, SH Franchising, LLC now enlists the help of quality franchisees to expand on this success, while still maintaining the strong reputation for which Senior Helpers is known. Our Process -

We have a professional, process-oriented staff ready to serve our clients and their families. When a prospective client contacts a Senior Helpers office, they set up a complimentary initial assessment at the client’s location to discuss the client’s needs and formulate a care plan. If necessary, a staff member, Social Worker or RN (depending on the State regulations) will conduct a full nursing assessment to gauge the client’s status and clarify the care plan. They determine the most appropriate caregiver for the client using the assessment information and the caregiver matching process. Follow-up is conducted immediately after service begins and on a periodic basis to ensure excellent care delivery.

It is Movement Monday, and this week we are spotlighting Rock Steady Boxing! 🥊💜

Rock Steady Boxing is a nonprofit organization that offers boxing-inspired fitness programs specifically designed for people with Parkinson's disease. No punches are thrown at opponents, but participants work hard to fight back against their symptoms through non-contact boxing drills, cardio, strength training, and balance exercises.

Research has shown that intense exercise, particularly boxing, may help slow the progression of Parkinson's symptoms and improve quality of life. Rock Steady Boxing has helped thousands of people living with Parkinson's regain strength, confidence, and community.

Not all fats are created equal. Some fats help support heart and brain health, while others are best enjoyed in moderation. Understanding the difference can make everyday food choices easier. 🫒💜

Good fats are typically unsaturated fats. These fats can help support cholesterol levels, brain function, and overall heart health. You’ll often find them in foods like:
• Avocados
• Olive oil and canola oil
• Nuts and seeds
• Fatty fishlike salmon and tuna

Bad fats are usually saturated or trans fats. Eating too much of these fats may increase the risk of heart health concerns, so they are best limited when possible. Common sources include:
• Fried foods
• Processed snacks
• Baked goods made with shortening
• Fast food meals and processed meats

Choosing more good fats and limiting bad fats is one simple way to support healthy aging through nutrition.

In recognition of Brain Awareness Week, it’s a great time to highlight foods that support brain health at every age. 🧠💜

Here are a few brain-healthy foods to keep in mind:
• Fatty fish like salmon and tuna
• Leafy greens such as spinach and kale
• Berries, especially blueberries and strawberries
• Nuts and seeds like walnuts and flaxseed
• Whole grains that support steady energy
• Olive oil for healthy fats

Pairing balanced nutrition with other healthy habits can help support memory, focus, and overall brain wellness as we age.

• Choose store brands, frozen fruits, and frozen vegetables
• Cook once and enjoy leftovers for another meal
• Buy in-season produce when possible
• Use beans, lentils, and eggs as affordable protein options

Healthy eating can be practical, affordable, and supportive of healthy aging.

Our Story

Welcome to Senior Helpers of Fairfax. As one of Northern Virginia's premier home care agencies, Senior Helpers will help you find the right care for your loved one. Senior Helpers of Fairfax, co-owned by Tony Haney and Cheryl Smith, was established to support the growing need for high quality and dependable home care in our local area. Tony is a veteran with 22 years of military service in the Air Force supporting global humanitarian and disaster relief operations. Cheryl is a former Fairfax County teacher and has many years of experience as an adult educator. They both wanted to continue providing service in a new way…to our seniors as a tribute for all they have done to serve us.
