Operations Update

Thank you for your ongoing support of Fairfax Family Physical Therapy. We hope this finds your family and yourself well. We wanted to take this time to update you on our current state of operations.

We are slowly getting back to normal staffing patterns but not business as usual. During this down time we installed a new glass barrier in the front office to keep our staff and patients safe. In efforts to follow the State of Vermont and CDC guidelines to keep everyone safe, we have also changed a few of our practice patterns.

Firstly, we do ask patients not to come in if they are ill, have recently returned from out of state travel or have been exposed to someone with confirmed Covid 19.

We no longer have magazines in the waiting area and have chairs spaced out at least 6 feet and ask that you maintain social distancing as possible.

We are advising patients to wear masks. We have some available for purchase or free if you cannot afford one. All staff wear masks while treating our patients in the clinic.

We would like patients to enter from the front, take care of your co pay and scheduling concerns and when done therapy exit from side door. Wash hands upon entering and exiting building. Pool patients may be asked to enter and exit pool from side pool entrance.

We have always washed our mats and changed linens between patients and are continuing to do so as well as wiping doorknobs, switches and all equipment regularly.

Please let us know how you are doing via a phone call (802) 849-9308 or email helpdesk@fairfaxfamilypt.com.

The front office is now regularly staffed and if you would like an appointment please do not hesitate to call.

Stay safe and well!

We are reaching out to all our friends and hope you are all well and safe. We remain open for patients who need in clinic care and we are also providing telehealth visits as needed. If you come to the clinic we ask you wear a mask and wash your hands when entering the clinic. We are making renovations to our front office to make it safer for everyone as this pandemic continues and threatens to recur.

Just a reminder to stay active as it boosts your immune system and practice safe social distancing. Share with us what positive experiences you may be having as a result of this new era in history.

I for one am very thankful for the community who has supported us since 2004 and a wonderful supportive family. Thanks to Dr. vonLepel and John Shraven I have tried out growing Microgreens. Very nutritious and fast.

Soon we will be posting pics of good body mechanics for cutting and handling firewood, because you all know what nuts we are with posture and lifting techniques.

Stay safe!! we miss everyone.

"Specialization and Overuse injuries in Young Athletes"

Here are some interesting facts about sports and young athletes.

Overuse injuries increase when children to begin to specialize in a single sport at a young age. This specialization causes repetitive trauma to tendons, bones and joints and result in overuse injuries that can plague children into their adult years.

In a 2013 study adolescents who spend more hours per week than their age playing one sport are 70% more like to experience overuse injuries than other injuries. Another study shows that kids who play one sport for 8 months out of the year are nearly 3Times more likely to experience an overuse injury in their hip or knee.

Many kids aspire to compete at an elite level and earn college scholarships. However, studies show that specialization early in a sport does not increase one's chance of becoming an elite athlete. In fact, 88% of college athletes played more than one sport as children and 70% didn't specialize until after 12 years old. Specialization really begins to show a benefit in the teen years.

5 tips to help your young athlete avoid overuse injuries
1. age vs hours - restrict the amount of time your child is playing one sport each week. The rule of thumb they should not be spending more hours per week than their age. Example - a nine year old should spend 9 hours or less each week at soccer practice or games combined.
2. take rest breaks - one or 2 days of rest each week and longer throughout the year are beneficial to avoiding overuse injuries.
3. Communicate discomfort - your athletes must know it is important to let their parents and coaches know if they are experiencing pain, discomfort or something just doesn't feel right.
4. You know your child - parents know their child best. keep a close eye on their performance and behaviors so you can recognize if something is off. Listen when they tell you something hurts.
5. Cross train - play multiple sports, or perform varied exercises to develop different muscle groups and give others a much - needed rest. This variation makes children better overall athletes and increases their agility.

For PATRIOTS fans Tom Brady did not play football until a Freshman in High school and experienced soccer, baseball and basketball as he was growing up. According to his 2015 article in USA today he encourages his kids to be kids and experience all sports and activities. Just have fun!

A new study says adults with lower-extremity joint symptoms who get at least one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise every week are more likely to be free of disability after four years than those who do not meet this exercise goal.
