One of our main ways to keep the relationship alive is to practice authentic vulnerable conversations. I can feel my own resistance to saying "That hurts my feelings," instead of "You shouldn't have said it that way. We normally try to control the outer world (i.e. our partner) to change our own uncomfortable feelings. Of course, if you study your efforts to change your partner's behavior, you realize that the success rate there is quite low. It's more effective to try to change yourself!
