Pertussis (also known as whooping cough) is one of the most contagious diseases around.

Caused by a bacterium (Bordetella pertussis), whooping cough makes children cough uncontrollably. The cough is often so hard and so persistent that children can't catch their breath and make a "whooping" sound when they attempt to breathe in against a windpipe severely narrowed by mucus.

The cough can be so violent that people with pertussis can crack ribs, break blood vessels, or develop hernias. Pneumonia or seizures can also develop.

Allergy & Asthma Season Is Around the Corner

Don’t wait for the first flare-up to get prepared! Now’s the time to:
- Check that all allergy & asthma medications are in date
- Refill prescriptions before they run out
- Make sure inhalers aren’t empty
- Replace spacers or masks if worn
- Update your child’s Asthma Action Plan
- Confirm school/daycare has current meds & paperwork
- Schedule a follow-up visit if symptoms weren’t well controlled last season

A little preparation now can mean fewer missed school days, better sleep, and easier breathing all season long.

Add More Whole Grains to Meals:
Simple 1-for-1 swaps can make your favorite meals healthier. Try whole grain foods like multigrain or whole wheat bread, brown rice, farrow, quinoa, or whole wheat pasta in place of refined bread, white rice, and pasta.

Try new rice dishes or make your family favorites with whole grains (which also have protein).

During the pandemic, you may have heard that COVID-19 is similar to the influenza (flu). COVID-19 and the flu are both contagious respiratory diseases, they are both caused by viruses, and they have some common symptoms. However, as seen in this post, COVID-19 and flu infections can affect people differently.

It is important to note that, since you cannot tell the difference between flu and COVID-19 by the symptoms alone, specific testing is necessary to tell what the illness is and to confirm a diagnosis.

Having a medical professional administer a specific test that detects both flu and COVID-19 allows you to get diagnosed and treated for the specific virus you have more quickly. Getting treated early for COVID-19 and flu can reduce your risk of getting very sick.

Doing chores is important for a child’s development. They help kids learn life skills and responsibility. Doing chores also teaches kids how important community is, whether it’s their family or their school or their neighborhood. They can boost confidence, too! Consider trying these tips when preparing your child to start doing chores or if your child is struggling to complete their chores:

1️⃣The earlier you start having kids do chores, the better. You can have them start doing little things around the house when they’re 3 or 4.

2️⃣Making chores part of a routine can help. Giving kids a choice of which chores they do and keeping a chore chart can also be helpful.

3️⃣Making the chore specific, like asking them to put their books away and then put their toys away, is better than saying, “Clean your room.” Being specific lets kids know what is expected. Breaking chores down into steps is especially important for kids with ADHD or learning disorders.

4️⃣Rewarding kids with praise or an allowance for completing chores gives kids a sense of accomplishment. You can build toward doing more or harder chores. For example, start by having your kid make their bed once a week and slowly build until they do it every day.

5️⃣If a kid knows what chores are expected of them but doesn’t do them, you can tell them you’re taking away their allowance or screen time. This way, kids start to understand that their choices have consequences. Then you can encourage them: “Next week is another chance to do your chores and earn your allowance. I know you can do it!”

What is the difference between gagging and For babies who are just starting solids, gagging is a natural response to new tastes, new textures, and subtle temperature changes.

A choking child may appear panicked, wide-eyed with an open mouth and drooling, and progressing to bluish skin in or around their lips, gums, fingernails, or eyes. Audible gasps, faint noises, or wheezing may be detected, but typically there is little sound because the airway is blocked. Ask your pediatrician about CPR training in your area before starting solid foods with your baby.

Common food choking hazards to avoid: whole nuts and seeds (peanuts, sunflower seeds, almonds), hard uncooked vegetables (carrots, celery), round foods (whole blueberries, grapes, or beans), popcorn, hot dogs, hard fresh fruit (chunks of apple), large chunks of cheese (string cheese), spoonfuls of nut and seed butters (undiluted peanut butter), candy (hard candy, jelly beans, fruit snacks).
