The OHC Genetic Risk Evaluation and Testing Program (GREAT) provides testing and counseling for people who may be at risk for hereditary cancer. Elizabeth Burneka, MSN, APRN, AOCNP, is on the genetics team and explains the process for those eligible.

“Our team helps those at-risk make informed decisions about their healthcare needs. We will determine your eligibility first with a comprehensive personal and family history. Depending on your history, cancer genetic testing may be ordered. Our genetics specialists will go over the results with you and if you are found to have a positive genetic link to cancer, we will provide you with an individualized care plan that could include surveillance, risk-reduction medications, or preventative surgery.

A positive genetics diagnosis will also include identifying those family members who may need to be informed. We offer free cancer genetics testing to your immediate family members living locally, if you test positive.

Genetic testing is useful in helping to make educated choices about your future. In a way, it serves as a road map to risk reduction. It is also important to understand that a positive result does not mean you WILL be diagnosed with cancer. It simply means we need to take steps going forward to help reduce risk and evaluate with screenings to find things sooner rather than later.”

To learn more about the OHC GREAT Program, please visit ohcare.com. You do not have to be an OHC patient to be seen by our genetics specialists.

However, an alarming trend shows an increase in women under 40 being diagnosed at a higher rate than was previously seen. For women like OHC patient Rebecca Davis, who was only 29 when she was diagnosed, and with no family history of breast cancer or related cancers, it was the last thing she expected. June is Cancer Immunotherapy Month and OHC advanced practice provider Emma Shaffer, MPAS, PA-C explains what immunotherapy is and how it is used to treat cervical cancer.

“Cancer grows by hiding from your immune system, which is designed to attack foreign cells or infection to keep you healthy. Cancer can actually trick your immune system into not just ignoring it, but potentially even defending it. Immunotherapies are medications that help boost your immune system to fight cancer more effectively. Some work by blocking specific proteins in your immune system to engage your immune response towards the cancer cells. Pembrolizumab is a leading immunotherapy we use to treat cervical cancer, often along with chemotherapy, depending on the patient’s specific diagnosis. It’s given through an IV every three to six weeks and has had success in providing better patient outcomes with fewer side effects.”

To learn more about immunotherapy, schedule an appointment, or to request a second opinion, visit ohcare.com.

According to the American Cancer Society, over 18,000 people will die from brain and spinal cord tumors each year. While your risk of being diagnosed with brain tumors is low, it’s important to know your treatment options and where to go if the unthinkable happens.

At OHC, our multi-disciplinary team of cancer experts creates personalized and targeted treatment plans that are intended to provide you with the best possible outcome and quality of life during treatment. A vital tool in our toolkit is Gamma Knife Radiosurgery.

Despite its name, the Gamma Knife procedure is a painless non-invasive form of radiation therapy with minimal risks and side effects to prolong a patient's lifespan and improve quality of life. It does this by using highly focused gamma X-rays to precisely target tumors and lesions while sparing radiation to the surrounding healthy brain.

OHC is the only provider in the region to offer this advanced treatment option and has highly skilled radiation oncologists on our team who are experts in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. Those experts include Imran H. Chowdhury, MD, Courtney L. Hentz, MD, Marc R. Mosbacher, MD, and Rahul N. Prasad, MD, MBA.

To learn more about Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, brain tumors, and our expert doctors, visit ohcare.com.
