“Pendulation is much more than simply an expansion and contraction, but rather the rhythm of our entire being as our internal states change back-and-forth between uncomfortable sensations, emotions, and images to more comfortable ones. This allows for new experiences to freshly emerge at each moment. When uncomfortable feelings don’t readily go away, they are usually associated with stress or trauma. If we are defeated and frozen in hopelessness, the ability to move out of that state through natural pendulation will be diminished. In this case, we may need a little help to get the pendulum moving again. When this natural resilience process has been shut down, it must be gradually restored. The mechanisms that regulate our mood, vitality, and health are dependent upon it. When this rhythm is reestablished, there is, at least, a tolerable balance between the pleasant and unpleasant.”

Historical trauma is the cumulative,
multigenerational, collective experience of emotional and psychological injury in communities and in descendants. One of the most familiar examples of historical trauma is that experienced by Native Americans.

Traumatic events, such as forced relocation, genocide, or the abduction of youth to more than 350 government-funded boarding schools, caused lasting impacts on Native American communities.

“The ordinary response to atrocities is to banish them from consciousness.

Atrocities, however, refuse to be buried.

Equally as powerful as the desire to deny atrocities is the conviction that denial does not work.

Folk wisdom is filled with ghosts who refuse to rest in their graves until their stories are told. Remembering and telling the truth about terrible events are prerequisites both for the restoration of the social order and for the healing of individual victims.”

Judith Lewis, Herman 1992, trauma and recovery, the aftermath of violence from domestic abuse to political terror.

“When faced with a difficult challenge, such as mastering complex equations or training for a marathon, many individuals will find the effort too costly, and withdraw. Others, however, will marshal their resources, and persist in their efforts against the same challenges, even in the absence of immediate reward. This individual difference has received a great deal of attention in recent years, as growing research indicates that individuals who persevere in the face of challenging situations show better life outcomes in the domains of health, academic achievement, and career success (Duckworth and Quinn, 2009; Duckworth and Gross, 2014).”

When you step outside into the snow and you feel the silence settle around you, it’s not your imagination. Snow has acoustical properties which absorb sound—up to 60% of noise, in fact. This is according to research by the University of Kentucky—and the quiet helps you feel calm and centered.

The peacefulness of the snow also helps you focus in on the sounds of the breeze, the breaking of a branch or the trickle of a nearby stream—and when you hear the sounds of nature, your brain activates the centers which control rest and relaxation, according to research by University of Sussex.

ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday School. These are the things I learned:

Share everything.

Play fair.

Don’t hit people.

Put things back where you found them.

Clean up your own mess.

Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.

Wash your hands before you eat.

Flush.

Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

Live a balanced life—learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

Take a nap every afternoon.

When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

Wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup—they all die. So do we.

And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned—the biggest word of all—LOOK.

Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or your government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all—the whole world—had cookies and milk about three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are—when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.
