What is Usui Reiki Lineage?

A Reiki Lineage refers to the Reiki Masters that have descended from Dr Mikao Usui. All lineages must be able to trace their roots back to Dr Usui, clearly stating the names of all the Reiki Masters along the way.
Before the death of Dr Mikao Usui, he passed the Usui system of healing on to Dr Hayashi. In turn, he made Mrs Hawayo Takata his successor. Before her death in 1980, Mrs Takata had attuned 22 Reiki Masters. Below are their names:
George Araki (deceased)
Barbara McCullough (deceased)
Beth Grey (deceased)
Ursula Baylow (deceased)
Paul Mitchell
Iris Ishikura (deceased)
Fran Brown (deceased)
Ethel Lombardi (deceased)
Barbara Weber Ray
Wanja Twan
Virginia Samdahl (deceased)
Phyllis Lei Furumoto (deseased)
Dorothy Baba (deceased)
Mary McFaden (deceased)
John Gray (deceased)
Rick Bockner
Bethel Phaigh (deceased)
Harry Kuboi (deceased)
Patricia Ewing
Shinobu Saito (deceased)
Kay Yamash*ta (deceased)

When choosing a Reiki Master to study with, always ask which lineage they belong to and confirm that once a Reiki level is complete, that a copy of that lineage be made available to you.

Mikao Usui (臼井甕男, 15 August 1865 – 9 March 1926, commonly Usui Mikao in Japanese) was the founder of a form of spiritual practice known as Reiki, used as an alternative therapy for the treatment of physical, emotional, and mental diseases. According to the inscription on his memorial stone, Usui taught Reiki to over 2,000 people during his lifetime. Eleven of these students continued their training to reach the Shinpiden level, a level equivalent to the Western third degree, or Master level.

As an adult, it is believed that he traveled to several Western countries, including the Americas, Europe, and China as a part of his continued study.[8] His studies included history, medicine, Buddhism, Christianity, psychology, and Taoism.

It is believed that the aim of Usui's teachings was to provide a method for students to achieve connection with the "universal life force" energy that would help them in their self-development. What sets Usui's teachings apart from other hands-on healing methods is his use of reiju or attunement to remind students of their spiritual connection. It seems that all students of Usui received five principles to live by and those with a further interest in the teachings became dedicated students. There does not appear to have been a distinction between clients and students in the beginning though this may have changed at some point. People began coming to Usui Mikao possibly for different purposes – some for healing and others for the spiritual teachings.

During the early 1920s, Usui did a 21-day practice on Mount Kurama called discipline of prayer and fasting, according to translator Hyakuten Inamoto. Common belief dictates that it was during these 21 days that Usui developed Reiki. As Mount Hiei is the main Tendai complex in Japan, and is very close to Kyoto, it has been surmised that Usui would also have practiced there if he had been a lay priest. This teaching included self-discipline, fasting and prayer.

In April of the 11th year of Taisho (1922 A.D.) he settled in Harajuku, Aoyama, Tokyo and set up the Gakkai to teach Reiki Ryoho and give treatments. Even outside of the building it was full of pairs of shoes of the visitors who had come from far and near.

In September of the 12th year (1923 A.D.) there was a great earthquake and a conflagration broke out. Everywhere there were groans of pains from the wounded. Sensei, feeling pity for them, went out every morning to go around the town, and he cured and saved an innumerable number of people.

What to expect during a Reiki session
Reiki is a natural hands-on healing that positively affects body, mind and spirit by encouraging natural healing processes for emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
“Individuals report different experiences. Some say that the practitioner's hands become hot; others report cooling hands and some people feel pulsating waves. The most common reports are of a release of stress and deep relaxation.” – Medical News Today
The Reiki practitioner uses either “hands-on” method where they gently place hands on the energy centers of your body, allowing Reiki energy to flow through them to you or they may choose to “beam.” Beaming is where the practitioner’s hands hover over the energy centers without physical contact, but remains in your aura (exterior energy field). A combination of both methods is commonly used. Some like to incorporate crystals, soft music, scents (incense, candles or essential oil diffusers) or any combination thereof. Some believe these can aid and enhance the relaxation and experience; others feel it unnecessary and prefer to use nothing more than their hands. There is no incorrect way. Relaxation and comfort are the key. Lastly, a Reiki II or Master may also send distance healing for those unable to attend in person.
Below is a diagram of the 7 major chakras (energy centers) of the body. Others are located in each joint of the body as well as in the palms of your hands and soles of your feet. Depending on the session length, purpose, and practitioner style, areas of focus may include several points around the head, forehead, throat, shoulders, elbows, hands, knees, ankles and feet.
The session can be performed laying down or seated. If lying down, it is usually done on a massage table and may include the front and back. If seated, it can be done in a comfortable chair.
**Beaming is always done near breasts and groin areas. NEVER touching**

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Although Reiki is not a substitute for traditional medical practice, Reiki works well with, and can enhance, many other healing modalities.
Reiki is a powerful means for:
• Supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself
• Changing unwanted habits
• Re-balancing the energy centers in the body and spirit
• Overcoming mental and emotional obstacles
• Stress reduction
• Bringing the body into harmony by releasing physical and emotional blockages
• Promoting a state of total relaxation
