It's rough out there. Coronavirus. Stock market volatility. System strain. Stress and fear running rampant.

Amidst the hand washing and the hand wringing that so many of us are engaged in, this is a mighty good time to think about how to boost our resilience.

The people in our lives – at home, at work, and everywhere else – help us ride the waves of tumult (local or global). We're more resilient and bounce back better and faster when we have strong relationships.

My latest blog post is full of ideas for how communication can help keep connections strong and healthy. It's like hand washing for your relationships.

Two weeks have passed, but the glow remains. I loved working with this engaged, dynamic group of professionals from throughout Latin America as they dove into Authentic Communication. We focused on Listening, the silver bullet of all effective and authentic communication. When I listened to them, I was humbled, inspired and amazed.

Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce breakfast meetings are a terrific way to start the day!

Today NCH Healthcare System CEO Paul Hiltz shared his vision, humor and breadth of knowledge on the Future of Healthcare.

My Top Takeaway: A healthier community (and country) will look beyond the question of coverage and address issues like social determinants for health. And chief among these is loneliness.

Listening is the silver bullet in effective (and authentic) communication. It's critical to connecting in a meaningful way and to working with efficiency and effectiveness. Listening is overlooked and underrated, and we can't get along without it.

But it's second -- not first -- in my list of Authentic Communication principles.

Why? Because real listening -- the kind where you're not "thinking about what you wanted to say next, glancing down at your phone or jumping in to offer your opinion" -- requires presence.

When I work with teams and individuals to improve communication (and outcomes), we begin with the person, the individual communicator. Having established a foundation in self-awareness, we can practice listening with intention, focus and curiosity. From there, the skills and actions of Authentic Communication fall into place.

What a privilege and joy to share Authentic Communication with 40 brilliant Latin America professionals in Mexico this week!
Together we looked at ways to strengthen individual capacity for the benefit of the organization (BE), privileging person-to-person connection (LISTEN), and how to create a firm and inclusive team foundation by making solid agreements (ACT).
Smoother work processes and elevated performance are among the outcomes delivered by the Authentic Communication methodology.
It has been so exciting for me to be part of this journey!

Discovery of the Week:
My creativity kicks into high gear with space, Post-its, and a magnificent view. In this environment — no devices, lots of scrap paper, and a bit of reference material — I’m my best messy and magnificent self. I feel at ease, in flow, aligned — just being me. (Standing on my head also seems to help, but it’s hard to take a selfie when you’re upside down!)

These two nuggets assaulted me with Love on the very first day of my pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. They were full of joy and adoration for each other, and that spilled over onto me. I was burned out and emotionally fragile, a bit bewildered and definitely feeling lost. Their Love filled me with hope and courage and lightened my first steps on the Camino. Their kindness made me feel less like a stranger. They helped set me at ease and set me free.

I carry their hearts(I carry them in my heart).
