On the eve of Commencement, meet nursing student Meghan Gavaghan -- who this weekend becomes the third in her family to graduate from SVC! Congratulations, Meghan!
What drew you to nursing?
Since I can remember, I have always been drawn to the medical field. I was the kid watching Untold Stories of the ER on TV instead of cartoons! Being surrounded by family members in the nursing field definitely contributed to that passion. People always told me nursing was in my blood and I think they were right; I can’t imagine doing anything else!
Why did you choose St. Vincent’s College?
SVC has been a staple in our community for nursing students since it opened in 1905. I grew up hearing stories from my grandma, Ann Gavaghan (SVC ‘54), about her time at SVC when she lived, worked and attended school full-time – and with perfect attendance, as she always liked to remind me! She went on went on to be the Night Nursing Supervisor at St. Vincent's Medical Center (SVMC), where she remained for many years before retiring to a case manager position. I’ve always felt a special connection with this school because of her, especially when I was able to tell her about my acceptance to the program just a few days before she passed.
Her sister, Elizabeth Malay also graduated from SVC in 1958. She spent the majority of her career in the Coronary Care Unit and PACU at SVMC. They were both very special people in my life.
What are your future plans?
I am currently applying to RN positions at the local hospitals and plan to continue my education. I will be attending Sacred Heart University’s RN to BSN program in the fall and plan to go back to school to become an APRN. My dream is to work in pediatrics!
Do you have a favorite experience from nursing school?
My favorite experience from nursing school was on the Labor & Delivery unit at St. Vincent’s Medical Center with Professor Dickerson. Her passion for L&D is contagious and I loved having the opportunity to learn from her. I also was given the opportunity to observe a cesarean birth, which was an incredible experience and something that has always stuck with me.
