1 in 5 people suffer from GERD ( Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) also known as acid reflux. Now, Chinese herbal therapy is very effective for treating GERD. But I have been seeing so many patients with reflux lately that I have been pondering what about modern lifestyle makes this so prevalent. Contributing factors include:

Poor Diet ✓
Eating on-the-go ✓
Stress ✓
Weak diaphragm ✓
Low stomach acid ✓

First off: Acid Reflux is generally NOT FROM TOO MUCH ACID. 20% or less of GERD cases actually have excessive acid. The problem is acid in the WRONG PLACE: in the esophagus when it should stay in the stomach.

Central to the cause of GERD is the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) not staying closed. Eating too much at once, or excessively fatty foods can cause the LES to relax and open up, allowing acid to flow up the esophagus. Another major factor is a weak diaphragm. Watch the video below to get a better understanding of WHY so many people have weak diaphragms.

As an involuntary muscle, the diaphragm functions whether we try to breathe or not. In fact, the more other muscles we recruit to breathe - the less the diaphragm works. Do you have a tight neck and shoulders? High stress? It's very likely that your scalenes, pec minor, and abdominal muscles are tensing and doing a large part of the breathing for you. Which will end up with your diaphragm muscle weak and not able to properly assist the LES in staying shut. So, bottom line is if you have GERD / Acid reflux you have got to learn to relax that tension!

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can help a great deal, but ultimately finding exercises and lifestyle choices that help you relax are essential. Regular Taiji and Yoga practice are often suggestions I make to any patients suffering from stress and tension.

Singing requires a strong diaphragm. But it's confusing as to how to strengthen an involuntary muscle. Watch this video to understand how to strengthen the d...
