Honey's Natural Goodness

Honey possesses unique nutritional and medicinal properties — an antibiotic, it ithe best substance remove excess Kapha from the body, it also helps remove toxins. These qualities make it one of the finest all-purpose remedies for many different types of imbalances:

• weak digestion • constipation
• hyperacidity • obesity
• nausea • vomiting
• heart palpitation • insomnia
• gingivitis • anemia
• asthma • irritating cough
• conjunctivitis • glaucoma
• itching of the eyes

Additionally honey provides energy, soothes pain, acts as an antiseptic, hastens healing and is effective in aiding in the cure of burns, wounds, and sores.

However, using honey properly is of the utmost importance. Only raw unheated honey should be used, and it should never be cooked. When heated, honey produces toxins and the molecules become glue-like, adhering to the mucous membranes, clogging the channels, and producing ama!

Charak, the ancient sage of Ayurveda, wrote:
“Nothing is as troublesome as the ama caused by improper intake of honey.”

According to Ayurveda, ama — toxic undigested matter in the body — is considered to be the root cause of most illnesses. Ama clogs the channels of the body, impeding the metabolism, preventing nutrients from being delivered efficiently to the cells and preventing wastes from being discharged efficiently from the body.

It is fine to use honey in your drinks; just let them cool to body temperature prior to adding your honey. It is better to avoid processed foods, often they are cooked with honey, all the more reason to steer clear!

Using Oil for Oral Health

After brushing your teeth, hold one tablespoon of cured sesame oil in your mouth and occasionally swish it around for twenty minutes. The oil gradually becomes thin and whitish. At this point you should spit it out, not swallow it.

Oil pulling has numerous benefits from the base of the neck up:
1) It draws out bad bacteria, reducing the causes of bad breath
2) It promotes healthy microbiota in the oral cavity, leading to healthier teeth and gums
3) It improves circulation and lubricates, detoxifying the sinus tissues, creating healthier sinuses
4) purifies, nourishes and relaxes muscles in the head, neck, and shoulders, reducing tension in those areas
5) reduces tension in the head and purifies the brain, preventing or reducing headaches
6) purifies and nourishes the organs of sight and hearing, improving their functioning

Eating Wisely Boosts Your Immunity and Energy

Select easy-to-digest foods:
Organic, non-GMO fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes; dairy products from grass fed cows, goats and sheep. Choose foods that are not heavily processed. These kinds of foods help to wake up your body's inner intelligence that assists in converting what you eat into ojas (immunity vitality factor).

Cook with spices:
Add mild spices when cooking vegetables, grains and legumes and the food converts more quickly to ojas. Spices improve flavor and support digestion, making the nutrients more easily available to the body.

Eat ojas (immunity) promoting foods:
Apples and other sweet, juicy fruits (such as pears, peaches, plums, sweet pineapple and mangos) support immunity because they transform quickly into ojas. Tree-ripened fruit should always be preferred. Pomegranate juice and pomegranate seed chutney are also excellent promoters of immunity, because they enhance digestion and elimination without increasing Pitta dosha.

Leafy organic greens such as Swiss chard, kale, mustard greens and spinach provide iron, calcium and other nutrients while simultaneously cleansing the bowel. Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower contain antioxidants, flavonoids and other immune-supporting nutrients. Whole grains such as quinoa, amaranth and barley also have immunity-nourishing effects, because they provide cleansing fiber and contain many essential nutrients.

Cook your food, but not too much:
According to Maharishi AyurVeda, food becomes more easily digestible when you cook it. But don't cook it too much, the food should be easy to chew, but not mushy.

Eat your heaviest meal when the digestive system is strongest:
Ayurveda identifies this time as midday, or Pitta dosha time (from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Eating when sun is highest in the sky is ideal. Eat lighter at breakfast and at night, when digestion is weaker.

Eat to hunger, not to taste:
Eating the right amount — not too much or too little — enhances ojas and supports the immune system. Maharishi AyurVeda recommends that you sip a cup of room-temperature water with your meals, so the meal is part liquid. Eat to only 3/4 of your capacity, in order to leave some space for the digestive process to take place.

Overcoming Life's Traumas with Ayurveda

Any trauma requires a healing process. In Ayurvedic healing we heal trauma by improving our state of balance, laying the foundation to eliminate the trauma on all levels--mind, emotions, and body.

Whenever damage exists, it’s the nature of the mind-body system to heal.
Any stress reduction helps this process. Avoid overwork and late nights, and even better, use Transcendental Meditation to experience deep rest and gain an opportunity to transcend, or get past, your trauma.

As you heal, know that you are not alone. If you find that you are overwhelmed, seek help either with a professional or someone you can confide in. Speaking to someone who listens unconditionally without judging makes a big difference.
