Recently, Meghan Trainor shared a beautiful photo doing skin-to-skin with her newborn daughter after welcoming her baby via gestational surrogacy.
What should have been a tender, joyful moment quickly turned into confusion - and criticism - from people who misunderstood what they were seeing, assuming that skin-to-skin is only appropriate for the person who carried the pregnancy or that surrogacy limits a parent’s role in those early moments.
Here’s the truth:
✨ Skin-to-skin contact offers well-documented benefits for newborns, including regulating heart rate, breathing, and body temperature, reducing stress, and supporting early bonding. Because of these benefits, it is encouraged for parents across all paths to parenthood - including surrogacy.
✨ Parenthood is defined by intention, responsibility, and love - not by pregnancy or even genetics. In surrogacy, the intended parent(s) are the baby’s parents from the very beginning, and those first moments of connection matter deeply.
In her own words, Meghan shared with People Magazine:
“I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family. It’s not something to whisper about or judge. It’s rooted in trust, science, love, and teamwork. Every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid.”
This moment is a powerful reminder of why surrogacy education matters. Families are built in many ways - and understanding replaces assumptions with compassion.
We celebrate Meghan, her surrogate, and the incredible collaboration, trust, and care that brought this baby into the world. 💕
