ASHWAGANDHA - - - Why & How NOT to Use It!

Dr. Marianne Teitelbaum

Ashwagandha is one of the most widely used herbs in all of Ayurveda since it is one of the best herbs to help you deal with stress, which is rampant nowadays. However, the ancient doctors said that since they couldn’t foresee what would happen in the future they were depending on the future doctors of Ayurveda to make the necessary changes always adhering to the core principles outlined in the ancient texts.

Let me first explain some facts about Ashwagandha and then I’ll show you some changes which need to be made regarding its use in this modern era.

Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) is considered an adaptogenic herb because it helps you to adapt to stress. One way of saying this is that when we’re under stress our adrenal glands dump a lot of cortisol into our bloodstream. Cortisol has so many side effects: it can decrease the thyroid gland function, it can flush magnesium out of your body increasing the risk of panic attacks and irregular heartbeats, it can make you gain weight in the face and abdomen, can cause high blood pressure, and can pretty much wreak havoc all around the body.

The good news is that Ashwagandha prevents the release of too much cortisol when we’re stressed, preventing all these side effects and helping us to remain balanced as we go through the stressful situations.

The word “Ashwagandha” means “which smells like a horse.” It is felt that the ancient doctors were implying here that Ashwagandha gives you some of the characteristic strength of the horse, and did not mean that you would walk around smelling like a horse. Horses are known to run in races, running faster and faster to win the race. Thus it makes you like a horse in terms of giving you more physical and mental stamina to perform your best in life. When you have this kind of strength and stability you will be more successful in winning your races throughout your life.

I use Ashwagandha a lot in my practice to support and strengthen the thyroid gland. It protects it from the side effects of the cortisol that we release when we’re under stress.

Many people might not know this but whenever we see patients with Vitiligo we usually see weakness of the thyroid gland at the same time. And Ashwagandha has a secondary use to treat vitiligo as well. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks the melanin or the pigment cells of the skin, leaving white patches around the body. Stress creates these autoimmune toxins and again Ashwagandha is the best herb for dealing with stress. As a sidetone here we of course use the primary herbs used to treat Vitiligo in my practice, but Ashwagandha is recommended as an adjunct herb as well.

But here’s the caveat: In Ayurveda we look at what happens after the herb comes into the body, which is different from here in the West where we just look at the action of the herb. It turns out that Ashwagandha pacifies Vata and Kapha, both of which create coldness in the body. Ashwagandha’s effects on the body are that it is ushna or hot. If you have more pitta in the body then this herb will aggravate the inherent heat that is already built up in your body.

In addition, its virya or overall property is hot and acidic and its vipak or post digestive effect is pungent. So this herb then can generate significant amounts of heat in the body.

Now in this day and age, what the ancient doctors couldn’t have foreseen is that our liver and blood are holding on to many environmental toxins, pharmaceuticals, and toxins from processed foods, all of which create heat in the body. So nowadays we have to be very careful with herbs used in Ayurveda such as Ashwagandha which are very hot in nature and can heat up the stomach, the liver, the skin, all of which are areas governed by Pitta dosha.

But my teacher and mentor Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra figured out a way to get herbs like Ashwagandha into people who already have a lot of heat or Pitta aggravation in their bodies. He developed two methods of taking the herbs using just the intelligence of what the herb does leaving behind the physical crude herb. He made herbal memory nectar drops and transdermal creams, neither of which will heat up the body since the side effects of the hot herb will not be there — only what is known as the prabhava, or the effect of what that herb does remains and goes immediately into all the gaps and cellular system of the body without going through the digestive tract, heating up the liver and stomach along the way.

I mention this here as a cautionary note. Everything we swallow has to be processed by the liver and again, in modern times just about every patient I see has too much heat circulating in the liver due to all the hot toxins being filtered by the liver everyday.

This means that in about 90% of the patients that I see who are taking the crude herb, which means the tablet or powder or tea of Ashwagandha, I usually take them off that and use our vibrational versions.

This is especially the case when treating autoimmune diseases since one of the many contributing factors we see with autoimmune diseases is overheating of the liver.

So whenever I have a patient who has Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland, I immediately take them off the crude herb of Ashwagandha onto our transdermal creams or herbal memory nectar drops. Otherwise the crude herb will flare up the heat in their liver and actually work against their attempts to heal the autoimmune disease.

So please keep this in mind about Ashwagandha. Yes, sooner or later most of us will need it to help us run all the races we encounter in this modern life, but most of us will not be candidates for the tablets and teas of Ashwagandha which will definitely heat up the liver, stomach, blood and the other areas commonly affected by heat.

Thank you,

Dr. Marianne Teitelbaum

Here’s some great clear understanding about the “parts” of our gut.

The small intestine: The Kitchen Area. The small intestine has been referred to as the kitchen area, which means it has to be clean, free of bacteria because this is where nutrients from the food you just ate are absorbing into your bloodstream. The large intestine is known as the garbage area where there are lots of bacteria breaking the food down and turning it into your bowel movement. So food has to move quickly through the small intestines to prevent bacteria from forming. What helps to propel the food through the small intestines, giving the right amount of movement so the food goes slow enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream yet fast enough to prevent an overgrowth of bacteria along the way? The answer is the bile coming out of your gall bladder. It creates two movements: peristalsis when you first eat the food to create gentle muscular contractions to push the food through, and the Migrating Motor Complex (the MMC) which is a strong push a couple hours after you eat. This is known as the Housekeeping Wave, because it gives one final strong push to move the food out (this causes your stomach to growl when it is relatively empty). But what happens if your bile doesn’t flow like it should? The food remains too long in the small intestines and bacteria can grow. This is known as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). It was rare in the past but now it is at epidemic levels for many reasons. There are many reasons the bile won’t flow, many of which are outlined in my book Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda. I have a whole chapter on the gall bladder bc when the thyroid is weak the gall bladder also becomes weak at the same time. Listen to my YouTube video on the gall bladder. I have another one on SIBO. It’s important to learn bc the real truth is we have dozens and dozens of times in a lifetime when the bile won’t flow, creating lots of digestive problems. But it is easy to fix if you nip it in the bud and get the bile out before it turns into sludge then gallstones.

Read on about the importance of eating “cultured” ghee. Not all ghee is cultured, in the Ayurvedic way. It makes a significant difference.
Thanks Dr. Marianne Teitelbaum for your clear and easy to read explanations!

Eat cultured ghee if you want to keep your arteries clean. The ghee recommended by the ancient seers of Ayurveda was cultured ghee. This is a process where you make yogurt out of the (grass-fed) heavy cream, turn that into yogurt, churn the yogurt cream into butter and then clarify the cultured butter. Many people skip these steps and just clarify the butter. But we should always heed the advice of these enlightened seers. It turns out that this extra step in fermenting the cream produces way more of the beneficial compounds that ghee contains: butyrate which your colon cells love to eat, conjugated linoleic acid which is food for your muscles and vitamin K2. Many people are afraid to eat ghee because it contains saturated fat but the latest research shows that cultured ghee actually keeps the arteries clean. For many reasons. Researchers found out last year that the high amounts of vitamin k2 in the ghee directs any calcium into your body into the bones which gives you great bone strength, and keeps the calcium out of the arteries, preventing plaque build up. Cultured ghee is becoming more and more available. We carry it in our office because we want our patients to heal themselves rapidly (high quality ghee delivers nutrients deeply into the cells and pulls out toxins, including heavy metals out of the cells). Or you could make it yourself, which is a great project for you and your kids. Go the extra mile and eat cultured ghee and find out why the enlightened sages of India called this the divine ghee.

Important understanding on how birth control pills create mischief in women’s’ bodies.
Thanks Dr. Marianne Teitelbaum for bringing up so clearly the hazards of this approach to birth control and acne

Teen and college-age girls, please listen. If you value your life, if you want to avoid hardship later on down the road, if you want to avoid serious health problems such as breast cancer, severe food allergies, recurring vaginal yeast, bacterial vaginitis, gas, bloating, HPV, cervical dysplasia and cancer, headaches, depression, mood swings, and strokes, then please never EVER go on the birth control pill. Take this advice from someone who has to work hard all day every day trying to bring the health back to all the victims who fall prey to taking this poison. Please. I can’t tell you how difficult it is to restore the health of someone who takes these dreadful medications. Use barrier methods and other less invasive methods to avoid a pregnancy. Don’t pollute your entire body for just a few days out of the month when you are fertile. When I take on a new female patient the first question I ask them if they’ve ever taken the pill so I know how difficult a job it’s going to be to help them heal. If they’ve never taken it then it will be smooth sailing and fairly easy to fix them. But if there’s a history of taking them then I know it’s going to be a long arduous path back to full health. Doctors give them out like candy but then you’re left on your own trying to dig yourself out of the ditch they leave you in.

Turmeric and keeping open channels during seasonal change…
Important knowledge brought out by our dear Vaidya Rk Mishra —

Ease your way into autumn with turmeric

In the SVA tradition, the channels play a central role in “ritu sandhi” – the junction between two seasons. Addressing the channels will not only make you feel better as the temperatures drop, but it will make sure you can get the most benefit out of your new seasonal diet, routine, or any herbal and spice additinos and supplements you may be introducing to stay in synch with the new season.
In the Summer time, with the heat, our physical channels, or srota-s, get fully dilated, allowing toxins to flow out freely. As temperatures drop, channels shrink slowly but surely, giving less easy passage to toxins.
It is important to nourish and keep the channels intelligent in the Fall, to support their health, so that when they shrink further in the winter time, we do not experience an overload of toxic build-up that will inevitably get stored.
In the Summer time, the pitta organs such as the liver, the spleen, the stomach, and pancreas accumulate more heat. The first thing to do as the seasons transition from Summer to Fall, is to cool off these organs and release their seasonally accumulated heat.
In order to ease your physiology into the autumnal detox, it is important to prep it. What are some things you can do?
1) Add turmeric to your diet: do not swallow turmeric capsules! Adding turmeric to your food is always the best way to do it. Here is a video with Vaidya Mishra on how to use Turmeric.
2) If you’ve been slacking off on your daily body massage, now is the time to get back on track. Daily warm oil massage pacifies Vata and will help ease the transition into Autumn. With Vaidya Mishra’s unique SVA formulations you can get the benefit of transdermal turmeric. This will help the physical channels immediately as the turmeric gets absorbed seconds after application.
3) Favor less raw fruits and sweet items, to help support your immunity. Start incorporating more warm and warming food items and spice into your diet. Vaidya Mishra’s Shroto Shudhi Masala and Tea are ideal at this point in time. Shroto Shudhi Masala was

designed to support the intelligence of the channels. When combined with turmeric, you will not only keep the detox process ongoing, but you will also give a boost to your immunity. The proper use of turmeric in the diet supports the liver and its functions, and the liver is the primary detox organ. When your liver is detoxing as it should, your cellular system detox will also be optimal, then fighting against seasonal colds, the flu, or other infections becomes very easy.
