86% of patients with dry eye disease have meibomian gland dysfunction 🤯

The meibomian glands that line our eyelids are responsible for producing the oily layer of the tear film. If these oils are not produced properly, our tears evaporate faster than they should, causing dry eye disease. If left untreated, dysfunction of the meibomian glands can cause irreversible gland death and severe symptoms that are incredibly difficult to manage.

Every patient receives this imaging as part of our dry eye evaluations to determine the state of meibomian gland health and recommend preventative treatment. Using eye drops is the only way to treat dry eye disease. If your eyes are dry, the only solution is to use more artificial tears throughout the day.

FACT💡
There are MULTIPLE strategies that our doctors implement for treating dry eye disease. Artificial tears can help temporary alleviate the symptoms of dry eye, but they won't help prevent the disease from worsening. AND--using too many artificial tears (especially those in bottles with preservatives) can actually WORSEN the condition!
