Congratulations to Lindsay S., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination.

“When my dad was admitted to the emergency room in the hospital, it was stressful, and we were feeling overwhelmed. But everything changed when we met Lindsay. She greeted us at the unit with kindness and a warm smile. She listened to everything we had been through and made us feel heard and supported. She was patient, compassionate, and truly seemed to care about both me and my dad.

From the start, Lindsay connected with my dad in a way that no other nurse did. She made him laugh — and he never laughs. One night during his stay, Lindsay noticed my dad had wet the bed, which was totally out of character for him. She knew something wasn’t right and quickly alerted the doctor. Her attention to that small detail led to an MRI, which showed a 5 mm brain mass or bleed in his frontal lobe. That level of attention and understanding shows how well she got to know her patient — not just his chart, but him as a person.

Every time Lindsay was his nurse, I knew he was in good hands. After he spent time in the ICU, he returned to the unit — and Lindsay was his nurse again. He wasn’t able to speak at that point, but he smiled when he saw her. He hadn’t smiled in days, but he did for her. That says everything.

Lindsay is not only incredibly caring and kind — she’s also sharp, observant, and dedicated. She takes the time to really know her patients so that nothing important gets missed. She gave me and my dad peace of mind during one of the scariest times in our lives. Smart, compassionate, and deeply committed to her patients — Lindsay is a true gem, and we are forever grateful for the care she gave my dad.”

Congratulations to Katie M., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination.

“This was my first experience navigating a broken bone—and it was my own daughter who was hurt. Having a very active 6-year-old with a broken arm brought a wave of “what ifs” and anxious moments. My first interaction with Katie was over the phone, when she kindly helped reschedule my daughter’s Orthopedics appointment after the original time didn’t work for us.

I understand how challenging scheduling can be. That’s why it meant so much that a nurse personally called to find a time that worked better for our family. She went above and beyond to ensure we were supported every step of the way.

Katie truly lives out Mayo Clinic’s motto: “The needs of the patient come first.” Every time we spoke, she asked, “How can we better help?” or “What more can I do to assist?” Over the past month, we’ve had several appointments in La Crosse, and Katie always welcomed us with a warm smile and genuine kindness.

Katie made sure our appointments were convenient and that we received the best care possible. Whether we were at the clinic or calling in with questions, she was always ready to help—thorough, compassionate and focused on making my daughter feel happy, healthy and truly cared for.”

It's Halloween, but not all the frights are found in haunted houses. Some of the season’s real “creepy crawlies” can show up much closer to home, on your skin, in your hair or even on your sheets.

From head lice and ringworm to ticks and bed bugs, these tiny pests can cause big discomfort if left unchecked.

Here’s how to keep them from haunting you:

➡️ Check and treat early. Itching that won’t quit may need a closer look.
➡️ Practice good hygiene. Clean, dry skin helps prevent fungal infections.
➡️ Be cautious and check your skin after outdoor adventures.
➡️ When in doubt, reach out to your healthcare team. They can help you identify and treat the cause quickly.

This Halloween, don’t let the itches and irritations spook you. Stay informed, stay healthy, and keep the real scares where they belong.

Halloween is rapidly approaching, and everyone is preparing for the big night of costumes, pumpkins, treats and fun. Here are a few tips to make your Halloween sweet, successful and safe.

Before heading out:
🔸Make sure costumes fit well and don’t trip you up.
🔸Skip the mask or check that you can see clearly through it.
🔸Wear comfortable shoes, not just costume ones.

While trick-or-treating:
🔸Stick with family or friends and carry a phone.
🔸Bring a flashlight or glow sticks to see and be seen.
🔸Only visit houses with lights on and use crosswalks carefully.

When you’re home:
🔸Keep candy out of reach of pets and small children.
🔸Watch for allergens.
🔸Enjoy some treats, but be sure to save some for later.

Stay visible, stay together, and make the night a treat, not a trick.

Wrapping up our breast cancer Q&A series with Dr. Graham King, Mayo Clinic Health System high-risk breast consultant and breast cancer awareness advocate, we’re addressing two final important questions he’s often asked:

🔵 Does my age affect my risk of breast cancer?
🔵 Should I have genetic testing to determine if I have a family-related risk of breast cancer?

Understanding your personal risk and keeping up with regular breast checks and exams can make a meaningful difference in early detection and peace of mind.

Every second counts when it comes to recognizing a stroke. Use the acronym F.A.S.T. to remember the warning signs:

F – Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side droop?
A – Arms: Ask them to raise both arms. Does one drift down or can’t rise?
S – Speech: Ask them to repeat a simple phrase. Is it slurred or strange?
T – Time: If you notice any of these signs, call 911 immediately.

Quick action can make the difference between recovery and disability.

Know the facts:

🔹A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, depriving brain cells of oxygen.
🔹Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the #1 cause of long-term disability in the U.S.
🔹80% of strokes are preventable.
🔹Most strokes are caused by blocked blood vessels (ischemic strokes); others occur when a vessel ruptures (hemorrhagic strokes).

You can reduce your risk:
Control blood pressure and diabetes, stay active, eat well, avoid smoking and limit alcohol.

Congratulations to Justin H., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination.

“Our 89-year-old mother was in the hospital for a week with atrial fibrillation and difficulty bringing her heart rate down to an acceptable level. Justin was her nurse. He is by far the best nurse that I have ever had an experience with. He is so compassionate. When our mother asked the same question numerous times, he patiently explained in terms that she could understand. When she didn't ask for things because she "didn't want to bother him," he anticipated her needs and brought her what she needed.

We asked many questions, including what all the numbers were on the monitors. He explained them to me and then later to my brother, teasing me that I couldn't explain it. He is so good-natured and developed a great rapport with both our mother and the family.

She had never experienced A-Fib before, so it was scary to all of us. He explained how the heart works and what the risk is. He noticed when mom needed small things and was very attentive to her. He made sure she had the treats that she loved as well.

There were several times that we had questions for the doctor, but we as the family had missed rounds. Rather than giving us a vague answer, he was very quick to reach out to the doctor directly to answer the question and even asked him to swing back around for us one morning so the family could understand the situation. He truly exemplified every one of Mayo's RICH TIES values. In addition to caring for our mother with such compassion, kindness and expertise, we felt like we gained a friend.”
